Product Description

DR Strings Logo and Dragon Skin+

Handcrafted

In 1989, DR Strings re-introduced handmade round core string making to the general market. It requires a lot of skill, time and care, but we feel it’s worth it because we can hear the difference between a handmade string and a machine made string.

Our winders take at least 6 months to learn their craft. It takes that long to develop a feel, an understanding, an instinct to make the constant tiny adjustments that only a hand can make. At each stage we test the wire, we check that it is pristine when it arrives from our suppliers, we inspect each and every wrap during production to ensure its quality, and then again as we hand-package it.

The top electric guitar players choose DR Strings for their dependability and giant sound

I've used DR Blues for years and thought I'd give these a try. Wow! Great strings.ProsI normally don't like coated strings on electric guitars because the coating shreds. While Dragon Skin strings are not coated in the traditional sense (think Elixir, Ernie Ball, Stringjoy), the Dragon Skin employs a microcoating which is barely perceptable to the touch, but definitely smoother than uncoated strings. It's really something you have to try to appreciate. The sound is rich, big, and full bodied. There is a nice clearness to the high B and E strings. Sustain is good.I've only had them installed for a short time but I can feel they will last longer than other coated strings I've tried. They are also more comfortable on the fingers than uncoated strings. Hmmmm....what to do with the 9 sets of DR Blues I have on my shelf....I kind of want to try the Dragon Skin on all my guitars.Highly recommended.

I normally stick with DR’s 10-46 gauge (not the Dragon Skin series), but after trying these 9-42 Dragon Skin+ strings on my Ibanez AZ, I’m genuinely impressed. I don’t usually go for lighter gauges, but these feel fantastic—super light on the fingers with almost no pressure needed, making slides and bends effortless. They’ve got this smooth, comfortable feel without sacrificing tone.Sonically, they’re bright and articulate, with a crisp attack that really shines in clean passages. Perfect for soft rock, indie, blues, or even some jazz. Surprisingly, they hold up decently for progressive rock too, though 9-42 gauge strings are definitely not geared for heavy riffing. The clarity is great, especially on complex chords and leads. One small thing — I wish they’d included an extra high E string just as a backup, but honestly, for the quality you’re getting, these are absolutely worth the price. The tone is brilliant, the sustain is solid, and they feel premium all around. I’m already planning to order the 10-46 Dragon Skin+ set next because if they’re anything like these, I know I’ll love them! Highly recommended!

The coating is subtle but I'd say these are overall nice strings if you don't mind spending a little more. I don't like changing my strings very often so something like this works well for me to help keep them fresher longer. Other than that, they act just like normal guitar strings. I've used DR a few times in the past and they've always been a solid option even if not my first pick for general use. These coated strings are nice though, feel good and sound good and hopefully will hold up a while compared to uncoated strings.

I normally don't use super thin strings at all, but I couldn't pass up a chance to try some coated strings in a new brand (for me). I'm a longtime player who grew up playing classical and jazz, meaning very heavy gauge (13 ot 14 gauge) strings for years. Light gauge strings always sound weak to me, but they have obvious advantages when it comes to playing quickly with low action.I've used Elixir coated strings for years on my acoustics, but I haven't really tried out any other coated strings at all. Most of my strings are nickel or flatwound chromes. On bass I like tapewound.I was swapping out the pickups on a new Jackson Pro Plus Dinky so I figured I would swap out the strings too. The coating on these is really subtle. I was kind of surprised at first at how natural they feel compared to what is on my acoustics. There is a little bit of drag but not a ton. The tone is somehow different, a little more output. Obviously they aren't the 11 to 14 gauge strings that I prefer, but they feel a bit more solid than a typical 9 gauge set.

I have actually been playing DR Tite-Fit strings for years: they are, by far, my favorite strings. They sound great, stay in tune really well, and last a long time. Guitar strings are a very personal preference kind of thing, so it's hard to try something new when you have already figured out what works for you, but I was eager to give these a try since I am so fond of DR already. These are coated strings, which have kind of an interesting feel to them. Once they are on the guitar it really isn't all that noticeable, but I definitely thought they felt weird as I was stringing up my beloved Les Paul. Once I got them stretched up and tuned, I got to work putting them through their paces. The first thing I noticed was how much "sizzle" these seem to have. I have EMG 81/85 active pickups in that Les Paul, so it is pretty hot to begin with, but with these, all of those Zakk Wylde-style pinch harmonics practically jump off of the fretboard. I typically play this guitar in D standard tuning, and occasionally drop the low D down to drop C tuning, so I kind of worried these might be a bit too floppy being a lighter gauge, but they hold up surprisingly well. They are very springy in this tuning making it super easy to make those wide bends for a nice sweeping vibrato.I am still not sure if I will replace my Tite-Fit strings with these (we guitarists fear change), but I do like them a lot. They seem, at least to me, to be better suited for heavier stuff on a standard 6 string, but clean tones sound pretty great too. Very bright and resonant.I have always recommended DR strings to anyone that asks, and always will: I never once had DR strings break once during a show and they sound great and stay in tune better than anything else I have ever tried, and these Dragon Skin strings seem no different. Such an easy recommendation.

so much fun
