I just received this so I haven't actually tried it on wood yet. I can't comment on it's performance in that regard. But there is a tight cap over the pins. It's got an arrow on it indicating you should pull it off, but it's shaped such that you can't grab it. To get it off I've had to work a knife under the edge to pry it up. It needs ridges or ribs or some kind of texture on it to enable you to grab it.

Bought to test fence poles and boards for dryness before using oil stain. Appears consistent in repeated readings of the same board but differs from a higher end surface reading meter. Regardless, I think this is accurate enough for my needs.
