At first it wasn't easy to use but the more I use it the faster I get at getting the correct reading(s). Be steady and try adjusting your aim(red laser dot), distance, angle of aim(it may be getting another reflection other than the reflective white tape), size and shape of the piece of reflective white tape you cut and you will see the reading being shown more often is the reading your looking for. Test on something you already know the rpm of. At this price it gets 5 stars and I love it.

Used for adjusting idle in my outboard. Worked great

This gave me stable reliable readings up to 24,000 RPM on my CNC spindle. If you are getting erratic readings, its because the surface you are measuring is too reflective. Wrapping my chuck with black electrical tape was not flat enough, but black cloth hockey grip tape worked perfectly.

I use for checking motor speed on various equipment, fans, pumps and even on an engine or two.because it requires the reflective tape to work properly you absolutely MUST keep a supply on hand or figure out some other reflective material to use with it. A dependency like this can be crippling sometimes if you have not prepared properly before the job. I have not checked the accuracy with my strobe light yet but if I find any large discrepancy I will edit this post.

This thing was a deal! I have used it to check the speed on my spare RC motors, and it is very easy to use, just point at the spinning part and press the button. I am very happy with this product.

When I held the "Test" button the laser would only stay on for eight or ten seconds then everything shut down. After a few aborted attempts the laser got stuck on. I had to pull the battery to get it to shut off. After a couple more tries the same thing happened. Then the screen went wonky and got stuck on some kind of test pattern where every section was on. Again I had to pull the battery to get it to shut off.The RPM reading was all over the place but to be fair I've heard you can't use these things under LED lights. There were too many other issues for me to bother trying again with different lighting.Returned.

This type of tach has a limitation that used under florescent or led lights will produce wildly inaccurate readings, as these lights flash 60 times a second and causes the tach to count these as well as the reflected light pulse in the measure. It is a common problem with these types of circuits. Sunlight works fine. Incandescent lights also work fine. In those conditions this unit works well, with good readings.
