I continue to be amazed at the ultra-cheap instrumentation that flows out of the factories in China. Granted, in some cases you get what you pay for... or less... and the resulting product is at best a toy, or at worst, useless junk. But once in a while you run across an offering like this digital capacitance meter from the Luo ke Store, and you wonder how they can make such a nice tool so inexpensively. This is a hand-held instrument in the “Fluke” design aesthetic—gray/slate-colored plastic housing wrapped with a brightly-colored rubber-esque “bumper.” The instrument is capable of reading capacitance from 0.1 pF to 20,000 uF to a precision of 1999 counts. An adjustment knob allows you to tare out lead capacitance when trying to measure low values. The instrument features a “hold” function, as well as an exceptionally-nice backlight. The instrument is powered with a 9-volt battery (included!)Use of the tool is intuitive and doesn’t really require a manual (though a sheet with directions is included.) I powered up the unit and went through several drawers of capacitors in my shop. The numbers reported were as expected. I compared readings between the Luo ke instrument and a couple of other meters I have in the shop, again, with good agreement. No ham radio guy, electronics kit builder, guitar-amp/audio aficionado, or electronics student should be without a capacitance meter, and now you don’t have to be. Is this meter comparable with a high-end LCR meter? Surely not. But you’ll have a tough time finding a better instrument for a single Jackson.

I grabbed this meter as a third choice to have lying about my electronics bench when I don't want to break out the heavy artilliary. (my Sprague TO-5 and my Hewlett Packard 4261A).This unit is compact and uses a single 9V battery. Terminals are standard banana jack style, and the ranges are clear and sensibly divided. Now this unit is not going to replace your high end LCR meter, but it was surprisingly accurate. Using my General Radio .5uf and 200pF reference capacitors at 76 degrees F, the meter displayed exactly .500 uF. On the PF scale, 200 pF read as 238 before compensating the cables I was using. When using the shortest possible cable practical, the unit measured 209 pF, which could easily be compensated using the handy trimmer on the face (since I had a known reference capacitor, something every serious electronics guy or gal should have)All in all, quite happy with this little quickie meter and the price was right.Five stars, no issues. Accurate enough to cover common stuff, wide ranging enough to get most everything normal done with no drama. Watch the compensation at very low pF values, but this is not the fault of the meter, rather the nature of low pF capacitance readings.A win!
