Very nice tool. Took a minute to figure out how to get the flex arm to tighten but then it was easy peasy to use. I got the analog gauge and it works great, strong magnet too. I would recommend this!

The stiffness of this requires some adjustments. Unfortunately, due to the throw distance available in the toggle switch, the adjustment between it-can-be-adjusted when disengaged and it-stays-in-place when engaged is very small. So you will end up with something you can adjust with the toggle, but isn't rigid or something you can't adjust with the toggle and is rigid.Overall, the multiple axis or fluid adjustment idea is not realized with this design.
Do not function at all. Will be returning

Base did not function at all.

I got this to check runout and leveling on a specialized machine and it works fairly well. The indicator does not move smoothly and is very jumpy. There appears to be a ball point on the tip but it does not seem to "roll" all to well. I like that it has dial edge indicators that can be easily moved. The magnetic base is where this really shines! I love how easy it is to manipulate and position the indicator in the correct position. The magnet is very strong and does not shift out of position easily. The actual dial indicator leaves a lot to be desired, but the base is worth the cost.

This is a pretty entry level setup. The base is decently heavy, the magnet is that as strong as some other more expensive budget “brands” though. The dial indicator works but is sort of temperamental, it works smoothly *most* of the time but every once in a while it gets a little jumpy and not as smooth. The arm is the biggest negative for me. It just doesn’t work that well, it won’t hold the indicator up sometimes and has too much defection. Depending on the radius of the arm it works better or worse. So the more straight it is the easier it is to tighten and keep stable.Over all not a bad setup, for a budget friendly shop that isn’t doing any real precision work.

I ordered this device mostly because of the dial indicator. It comes in a very sturdy plastic storage container and includes the dial indicator, the magnetic base, and a gooseneck arm to connect the two. The base has a magnet that moves inside it at a turn of a flag handle. The magnet is not the strongest type, but the base itself is pretty heavy. The gooseneck arm is supposed to be able to assume necessary shape and stay rigid when you lock it with a latch. I could not make it latch securely, unless it was kept straight. The adjustment screw that tightens the steel cord inside this arm did not help much.In any case, the indicator was the main part I needed. It has 1" range of measurement, which is huge considering the sensitivity of it. The minor scale division is 1 mil (0.001 inch), a full turn is 0.1 inch. The indicator looks solid, except the lens is thin plastic, so it will get scratched in no time at all. The dial may be rotated to set the zero point at the necessary position. To rotate the dial, a lock screw needs to be loosened. The indicator comes with two clip markers on the dial rim, they may be removed and re-attached where needed. The problem is, you have to remove these markers before rotating the dial, otherwise they catch on the locking screw. This is an obvious design deficiency. The markers may be replaced with small pieces of electric tape, so this is not that critical. The indicator as is may be useful, for example for setting up a CNC router. I would not trust the gooseneck arm however, and the magnetic base is only useful with magnetically attracted surfaces.

I wouldn't trust it with any serious force, but it is reasonable to hold a micrometer, a little light on the magnet, fairly east to shift the position "up" doesn't seem to hold position all that well, but easy to use and should be fine for careful work with low forces.

Likes: Good magnetic hold, locking arm connection/mount optionsDislikes: None so far.I'm not a machinist, a welder or an electrician. I probably have no business ordering this but I thought it would be fun to play with and I was right. You can use it as a temporary mount to metal surfaces and pipes. Attach cameras, speakers, something to scare you family. Have fun. I'm sure you can do industry-appropriate things with it also.
