I develop projects using various microcontroller units (MCU) like Arduinos, ESP8266, and ESP32. Often I need to control a motor and need a higher voltage and current than can be delivered directly from the MCU. In such instances I need to use a mechanical or solid-state relay or preferably a suitable MOSFET device. I prefer to use MOSFETs as they are less expensive and can be tailored for a specific application. These IRF3205 MOSFETs are ideal for use with MCUs: they have a low activation voltage (VGS(th)) of 2 to 4 V and a low internal resistance (RDS(on)) of 8 mohm. That last spec means that they can be used without a heatsink for most of my applications. These are n-channel devices which means that they should be connected to the negative contact of the load. A Schottky diode is needed across an inductive load like a motor to protect the MOFET device. It’s very easy to pulse-width modulate (PWM) these MOSFETs even at a high frequency to enable speed control of motors or dimming high-power LEDs. At a current price of less than $13 for 10 of these MOSFETs these provide a very inexpensive way of turning on and controlling the speed of low voltage motors.
