Cylinder Leakage Tester ·

  • Uses: The cylinder leakage tester is used to measure the sealing performance of automobile engine cylinders and determine if they are within an acceptable leakage range. It can also analyze and identify the location and cause of any leakage for troubleshooting purposes.

  • · Principle: The testing principle involves injecting a certain amount of compressed air into the cylinder while the engine is static and the piston is at top dead center. The time it takes for the air pressure to drop to a specified value reflects the magnitude of the leakage. A shorter time indicates a larger leakage, while a longer time indicates a smaller leakage. By continuously supplying the cylinder with compressed air at a constant pressure, the main area causing the leakage can be determined, allowing for targeted engine maintenance.
  • · Instrument Structure: The instrument consists of a pressure regulator, intake pressure gauge, measurement pressure gauge, air duct, quick-change connector, and other components.

· Main Technical Parameters:

  • Pressure Measurement Range: 0-40psi
  • Intake Pressure Range: 50psi-120psi
  • Working Air Source Pressure: 10-40psi

Instructions:

  1. Remove all spark plugs from the engine and rotate the crankshaft using a hand crank to position the piston at top dead center. Engage the parking brake and shift to neutral to prevent the compressed air from moving the piston.
  2. Screw the air supply connector onto the first cylinder at top dead center. Connect one end of the air duct with a quick-change connector to the output end of the measuring instrument, and connect the compressed air source to the input end of the testing instrument. Close the pressure regulating valve of the instrument (rotate the knob out when in use).
  3. Prepare a stopwatch, open the pressure regulating valve, adjust the dial gauge pointer to zero, close the intake port, and simultaneously start the stopwatch. Record the holding time and observe the changes in the measurement pressure gauge. When the gauge pressure drops to 60%, stop the stopwatch and record the time it takes for the pressure to drop from zero to 60%. By comparing this time with similar engines, the extent of cylinder leakage can be diagnosed. The longer the holding time, the better the cylinder sealing; if the holding time is very short, it indicates severe cylinder leakage and repair is necessary. For convenience, test each cylinder in the firing order sequence. One cylinder can be tested with each half rotation (180°) of the crankshaft.
  4. Determining the leakage location: Start the compressed air compressor and supply air to the cylinder at top dead center. Use the pressure regulating valve to control the pressure at around 40psi, carefully listen for any air leakage sound, and determine the location of the cylinder leakage. If air leakage is heard at the intake manifold, it indicates that the intake valve is not sealing properly; if leakage is heard at the exhaust pipe or muffler outlet, it indicates that the exhaust valve is not sealing properly; if slight air leakage is heard at the oil filler cap, it is considered normal; if a significant sound and airflow can be felt, it indicates serious leakage, suggesting that the piston-cylinder clearance is not sealed properly; if bubbles are seen rising from the radiator water when air is supplied, it indicates a blown head gasket, resulting in communication between the cylinder and water jacket; if leakage sound is heard at the adjacent cylinder's spark plug port, it indicates that the head gasket between the two cylinders has been blown and causing compression leakage.

Product was impossible to assemble, fitting was too big for the female 5socket. Didn't have thtead match for sparkplug type either. Completely useless and poorly manufactured.

There must be a quality control problem with this manufacturer because from the reviews there are units that work, whereas I get the unit that doesn't. Internally, in the metal block to which the gauges, regulator and hose is attached, there should be an restrictor between the two gauges . This is apparently missing. Not only it is required to use 100psi air pressure to reach the calibration set point, even though the instructions say 10 to 20psi, but then, if you let the spark plug hose open to leak, it only shows 40% leakage, instead of 100%.

I dont have any pics but I bought this for my dad and he love it and says that get works well. He found it easy to use, affordable, good size and storage and pressure hold.

others have posted about the quality of the finished product. one thing other reviews say is that the pipe that connects to the sparkplug hole has a swivel that spins- seems like a defect because mine did not have this issue. the adapters seem to be threaded correctly as well. the gauge itself works ok but doesnt let you go to 100 psi more like 35psi which is plenty to do the test with. if you are a pro mechanic yes buy a nicer and more accurate and durable tester. for the DIY guys this should last through the several cars you may end up using it on in your lifetime. if not you are out less than $40. I read reviews and figured I would return mine if it was defective but it was fine

Not really anything to dislike. I paid mere crumpets for this very precise piece of testing kit. And i kid you not it will go toe to toe with the highest name brand competitors. The build and feel is study and feelsbextremly well made. And did a side by side leak down comparrison with my buddies eastwood kit. This kit was seriously right on the mark accurate. Easy to use. And this comes with a protective case. Keeps it safe and organized. I know of 2 big name brand companies that you would spend 8 times as much for the same tool and MAC..... cornwell.....ahemmm.... that wouldnt offer the consumer a case for their tools. Good job to the manufacture for a well made durable and top quality product prices at an insanely low rate. Thank you amazon for recommending this product to me instead of the one from another brand that was 3 times the price and came with less. Thank you for helping make my dollar count. For my fellow mechanics. Do it your selfers. Even if you dont know how to use this yet. Buy it!!! They may as well be giving it away. Because you can learn how to use it become more diversified. Add another high quality specialty tool to the shop and save yourself an even bigger expense doing a leak down test yourself rather than shelling out an easy 150 bucks for someone else to do one.

The build quality of this kit was poor. I was able to get it to work, but it was definitely leaking straight out of the box - as soon as I installed it: audible leak coming from one of the pre-assembled hose connections. Product was obviously not tested before it was packaged up. The threads on the spark plug adapter were also very poorly cut and were very difficult to engage in the cylinder head.I returned this product and will spend a little more on a set for future needs.
