The Creality CR-Scan Ferret Pro 3D Scanner seemed like an interesting technology and was indeed an adventure. Most of my 3D printing has been on a mini-3D printer and I got into the Ferret Pro expecting the device to enhance my capabilities. The scanner comes in an attractive zippered pouch with cut-outs for each of the components. The first thing you notice when you open the pouch is that there is a lot there, with six pieces plus cables to connect them, plus a manual and sheets of circular stickers. The cables are in labeled bags and it’s essential – at least at first - to pay attention to manual and the cable labels as you connect everything. The scanner can connect to a smart phone, which provides greater mobility, but can also connect via WiFi directly to a computer. It worked well in both settings, though I found myself preferring the direct WiFi connection to a computer, which facilitated my processing the scans. My initial inclination was to scan some larger geometric items , but I quickly found/learned that the device is limited in scanning flat and solid-color areas unless those circular are placed on the item at regular intervals. The scanner worked best scanning areas with lots of texture or color variation, and placing the item on a turntable produced the best results when practicable. Scanning was a slow process using a turntable. The scanner can lose its place and you have to go backwards to let it recognize an area before proceeding.I scanned a small (~3inch tall pie bird) which shows the scanner’s picking up smooth texture with only color variation, and a scan of a small replicate of Michelangelo’s Pieta showing scan with texture but no color variation. You don’t get greater precision when you scan a smaller item closeup. Despite the large variation in texture on the Pieta, the scanner was limited by it’s ~0.1 inch precision. In all settings it is a challenge to cover all angles and areas on any scan and you see the scanned item as a shell of color. The Ferret Pro 3D Scanner excelled in scanning human faces, probably because of all the variation in both color and texture. This was the most fun with the scanner. Bring on the custom bobbleheads!Overall, there was a learning and practice curve on the Creality Ferret Pro 3D Scanner, but it will turn out to be a fun accessory once you’ve learned the device and developed your scanning technique.

This item is not compatible with iphone 16 pro max, there may be future updates for compatibility, but the most recent version (updated 30th October for iOS 18 compatibility) is not compatible, the iphone never connects wirelessly despite connected to the "wifi bridge"- loading the app just states "no scanner connected", and USB-C connection is not supported.

Un able to install the software to my phone. Every time I downloaded had to go to play store to install more software just to try and open what I downloaded in the first place and still couldn't get anything to even turn the darn thing on. Thought this would be an easy plug and play, to point and scan, but no. I dont have the time or patience to deal with this.

I have 2 other 3D scanners, a Revopoint Mini and Revopoint POP3, and I love them both. Creality's Ferret Pro manages to differentiate itself by being able to scan shiny or black surfaces. The Revopoint Mini absolutely cannot and the POP3 can sort of scan with major difficulty.Revopoint's software is significantly more comprehensive with more controls while still including a 1-click-Go solution. Creality's, at the time of writing, has a 1-click-Go button as well as two configuration options. Point-Merging/Filtering with 2 options: resolution and sensitivity. Then Meshing, which has 2 sliders and 2 checkboxes: Face count, Denoise Strength, Fill Holes checkbox, and Closed checkbox. That's it.I included an image of the Ferret Pro's and the POP3's finished model side by side. Each scan was around 2 minutes went through their respective softwares. One thing of note is the texturing job on the Creality Scan/Software is way more natural looking. The POP3 has a flash that fires for the RGB camera which kind of washed out the image texture.Critical detail is a bit softer on the Ferret Pro. The software did some weird things to the scan, like smearing the rear control surface in the center. There is a memory card door open at the top which is kind of blobby. There is a big block of black equipment on the bottom right which the Ferret Pro got perfectly. The POP3 got more critical detail, but failed to get the bottom right black block which was then filtered out by the software for getting too few points. The grip texture around the open door is more defined on the POP3, reflected in both of the original point clouds. Obviously, the the model is also noisier from the POP3. Additional time tuning the settings might improve the model. The Ferret Pro does way better when moving the camera around than the POP3. The POP3's software complains rather frequently that the camera is moving too fast or to hold it steadier. The Ferret Pro chugs along just fine. The Ferret Pro's software also tends to keep track better than the POP3. Very frequently with the POP3's software the scan will ruin itself when it starts doing an infinite repeat. The Ferret pro only did an overlapping repeat once when I was scanning a keyboard. The POP3 has built in Wi-Fi while the Ferret Pro has an external box with Wi-Fi. I was hoping to use the Ferret Pro over Wi-Fi to my desktop PC but none of the documentation mentions that configuration, only Wi-Fi to Phone. I did a few scans over the Wi-Fi module to my cell phone and they turned out pretty good. The scan frame count is limited to the phone's RAM capacity. However, Creality's desktop software allows multiple scans to a single scene so the phone's RAM shouldn't be much of an issue - just take multiple scans.I really like the Ferret Pro. Hopefully the software matures a bit more cause I really like scans coming out of the hardware.
