Irlen 9" x 12" colored acetate overlays can be placed over printed materials to determine whether reading is made easier. Each sheet has a glare and non-glare side for increasing comfort. Each color is carefully determined by years of Irlen research. Not everyone is helped by the same color or combination of colors.

I used these with certain students when I taught reading. I left my set with another teacher when I retired. Now, I'm working with my 8 yr old granddaughter with a reading disability and ordered these to see if they would help her. The blue gray is perfect, so I'm sending half a sheet to school for her and the others for the teacher to see if they help her other students.

These were perfect!! I recently ran across an article about Irlen's. It was like the article was written about my daughter. I found these overlays and thought for the price I would try these before I spent the money to have her tested. We went through all the colors and the minute we used the rose overlay she knew immediately it was perfect for her. Some she would say it's a little a better, or no, not at all on some of the other colors. When we got to the rose she said YES, it's all clear. I was both amazed and frustrated that it took until the end of 3rd grade for us to find out this was what she needed. I HIGHLY recommend getting these if you think you or your child is suffering from Irlen's. We have a meeting with a diagnostician in June to get her lenses, but until then the overlay is working perfectly.

Good quality overlays for those with reading difficulties. Please note that overlays do not cure dyslexia, which is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. HOWEVER, is is common for those with dyslexia to also be affected by visual stress/irlen, which is thought to be caused by an over stimulation of the visual cortex, which in turn causes distortions in text as well as headaches, fatigue and many other symptoms. The use of the correct color filters some of the more stimulating wavelengths of light, allowing the brain to be able to process the visual information correctly and "fix" the words on the page. It is essential to test with as many colors as possible to ensure you find the most effective.Irlen are doing great work, however It is also worth noting that UK based Crossbow Education are also fantastic in this field, I like to have both company's sets available, as it gives me a wider range of colors for the kids to choose from. You can get their products on Amazon here in the states too, although I would recommend going to their US website as they have a wider range of products, with some smaller "Reading Rulers" which are useful for the kids to keep in their books as bookmarks.

Used the colored overlays to determine if my daughter was a candidate for Irlen glasses. She was! She used a overlay for reading while we waited for the evaluation and then for the glasses to arrive. A great tool to help determine if it is worth spending the money for a full evaluation. She is now happy to be able to not only read with less fatigue using her new glasses but her distance vision and depth perception are much improved also.

A bit expensive and could not tell any difference in the words

Irlen sheets, and Irlen products/science are, in general, still somewhat controversial. However, do not let that stop you from experimenting with what just might work. Our office provides these to college students, but only after we review medical documentation and thoroughly review impacts to learning. The results are worth the money spent: improved time on task when using a computer, less overall eyestrain, improved reading time for print materials, improved ability to take tests (concentration/focus). More and more mainstream science is finding support for using different colors, and how color can impact processing. In addition, I was asked once "does it work or do people think it works," and as long as performance improves, does it matter?

My son was complaining that words were moving around on the page. Many of my friends mentioned Irlen's syndrome and encouraged me take him in for the testing. The test by an Irlen's certified screener in my area is $440. So to check this myself I ordered this kit and made a chart of all of the single color and double color combinations. Printing off two font sizes (12 and 8 pt) with a paragraph of text, we were able to determine his optimal color out of 55 combinations. It took a coupe of days because certain colors amplify the movement. Once we got his colors we checked a couple of alternatives to Irlens, and after 3 optomotrists, an othamologist, a psychologist (who claimed knew Irlens testing) we ended with a visual therapist who prescribed special glasses that stopped the movement for my son. He went from 56 words per minute to 99 in about 2 months after the glasses, so we didn't persue Irlens's lenses. In the Irlens's book, they recommend checking with optomotrists and visual therapists prior to getting Irlen's lenses to make sure there isn't an underlying issue.
