About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I recently picked up the Coleman lantern, and I’m really impressed! It’s incredibly bright and lights up the whole campsite with ease. The build is sturdy, and it has that classic old-school lantern feel, but with a modern twist—new tech that makes it so much easier to use. It took just a quick read of the instructions to get it lit, and from there, it’s been smooth sailing. Whether we’re camping or just need extra light around the yard, this lantern delivers every time. It’s reliable, bright, and durable—definitely a must-have for any outdoor adventure!

I'm convinced zero engineers were involved in the design of this product, and zero QA people involved in the manufacturing process. The only way to attach the handle and top to the lantern is via a captive nut which should thread onto a threaded post at the top of the lantern. Except the post is itself free-floating and is juuuuust out of reach of the nut when in the down position. So the only way to get it threaded is to either use some sort of NASA centrifuge to keep the screw extended upward or, I guess hold it fragile-glass-mantle-and-explosive-tank upside down? Idiocy. After spending an hour trying to figure this out and eventually using a custom string-based rig to keep the threaded post extended against gravity, I go to try it out and of course the spark igniter does not work, at all.I'm glad I'm returning it since I'm sure the first time I'd use it it would explode like an IED.For what you pay for this thing one would expect it would function but it does not. DO NOT BUY.

Yes, it takes a propane canister, still cheaper than most of the batteries for some lanterns. I love the brightness, much brighter than my battery powered lantern. We use this for camping and by our fire pit next to our pond.

Quite simply, you must burn the bags first before the electric start should be used. for this use a lighter or match (while the bags are installed and the glass is in place and the lantern is put together).. the bags will burn for a bit, shrink and start to glow.. there will be smoke! dont worry.. this is normal on the first burn. After the initial burn in, the electric starter will work, just let a little gas in, and proceed to the the sparker. Boom light! Its roughly the same as my 20 year old coleman, however not as rugged. but for the price, its fine. please note, once the bags have been burned once.. they are now fragile. dont touch unless you wana replace them. Also, should go without saying, this thing will be hot.. dont touch the glass when in and just after operation.

I have owned several different brands of gas lanterns. Every time I try another brand though I seem to always end up returning to Coleman.I had owned a certain Coleman lantern for many years when I finally decided it was time to replace it. I decided to replace it with a cheaper brand with the idea it would be just as good for the money. Boy was I wrong! I used the cheaper one twice experiencing more dislikes with it's design and operation than I will go into here before I left it in the corner of my garage probably to be thrown out or given away someday and I purchased this Coleman lantern. This lantern is pretty much of a typical Coleman design. The two mantles provide far more light more economically than any battery powered lantern I have used including those using LED bulbs. The globe is held on place so it won't rattle around and break during transport and the handle is large enough to keep your hand away from the heat while you are carrying it and large enough to keep a tent or camper ceiling from getting to hot if you hang it up (be sure to provide plenty of ventilation if operating inside a tent or camper though).I have always had some trouble with the reliability of Coleman's igniters on their lanterns, and the igniter on this one seems to be no different. If the gap for the spark is adjusted properly it can work quite effectively, but the probe seems to be overly loose and is consistently out of adjustment which means little or no spark is produced at all and therefore no ignition. The lantern can be fairly easy to light by hand with a match, but sometimes very difficult to light with a normal pocket lighter. Either way it's usually easier than taking the globe off to re-adjust the igniter. The case is not the higher quality plastic that I have used with other Coleman lanterns. It is thinner and I think less durable plastic that largely only encloses the globe but not the rest of the lantern (The globe is mainly what you want to protect during transport anyway). It can also be slightly irritating because it is sometimes difficult to open when you actually trying to open it, yet it seems if you bump it in just the right way it will pop open on it's own.Over all this lantern itself is a typically reliable Coleman lantern with pretty much all the light you will need in any outdoor situation, while the included case may not be the quality you are used to in other Coleman lantern cases but it is functional and will reliably protect the parts that most need protecting during transport.
