This is my second Dietz lantern, they are pretty cool lanterns, this little wizard will burn for approximately 30 hours due to its large capacity reservoir , which is called a font, nice lighting and does have some heat to throw off, no leakage, just be smart and fill it 75- 85 per cent it's capacity, the only down fall was the first couple hours when lit it has a small odor of paint burning off, run it outside for the first couple hours, all in all great value for the money

After doing some research and reading some reviews, I finally bought one of these. I filled it w/ a quarter of good lamp oil, and it's burning as I type this. I don't have any leak issues, and it appears to be well made...stand by for an update after I use it for awhile. I'm happy w/ the purchase, and would recommend this to anyone. It puts off a bit of heat, so will be nice at the cabin on a cold MT night.

This is a beautiful lamp. The quality is significantly better than a Stansport lamp I have. The Dietz puts out good light too. I haven't had any leaks with mine. I like the long runtime between refills!

It's a lantern, it's in great condition, it lights up the room, and it did not leak.

As we all know everything comes from China it is well built but, without the American craftsmanship,,,not bashing here but China tends to round up corners,,,,can’t complain about shipper he did an honest job shipped like promised 👍

I have several Dietz lamps, and none of mine have the leaks that so many people complain about. I'm not saying it's impossible that some get sent out with faulty soldering, but due to the amount of complaints I see on these reviews, I really believe a lot of people just aren't reading the directions where it specifically says "Do not fill past 85% or it may leak".On to the Dietz No 1:Arrived in a bag inside the amazon box, not in its own box like some of the smaller Dietz lamps do. Not that it's a big deal, I was just surprised. The second thing I noticed is the great blue color. I got blue because it's my wifes favorite color and I figured she wouldn't mind my getting another lamp if she saw it was blue. The body is metal, which is a big step up from some of the other cheaper lamps.Mine did come with a small dent on the reservoir, but I buy these for using, not for show, so I don't care. The glass was in tact and overall it seems sturdy and well made, especially for the price. The base is huge, as others have mentioned, but thats exactly the reason I got this one. Stability and the ability to burn oil for days straight without refilling (or weeks/months if you only use if a few hour a day).On a separate but related note, I used paraffin oil for the first time in this lamp. It's expensive but burns a lot cleaner, without the chemical smell of cheaper oils. I will be putting my cheap oil reserves on the back burner, so to speak, and only using the paraffin from now on.Overall: For the price, a good purchase. Metal, large reservoir, looks great, color is nice, ambiance appreciated.

Fantastic lantern. If you're used to standard big-box-retailer fare, this lantern is a HUGE step up in quality and size and you'll be very pleasantly surprised. I've burned it ~12 hours and have yet to notice a drop in the fuel level. No smell when burning(except for a few hours after the very first use), even on plain ole kerosene. While it's attractively built and painted, this lantern is clearly built to be used, not just displayed. Packaging was GREAT, I was really surprised at how well this lantern was packaged.Tips for use: The wick will probably need to be trimmed when you receive it, mine was uneven and had many loose threads. I used angle nippers, a sharp pair of scissors will do better. I just removed the whole burner assembly for easier access and trimmed the wick level with the wick tube. Burn it for several hours the first time OUTSIDE. The paint will be doing it's final outgassing upon being heated and greases and oils from stamping will be burning off during this period, you don't want that going on in your house. When you first light this lantern, turn it up a little bit and let the whole lantern heat up for 10-15 minutes before turning the lantern up to full brightness. Likewise when putting out the lantern, turn it down to a very low flame and let the lantern cool for a few minutes before actually blowing it out. The flame doesn't actually burn liquid fuel, it burns fuel that's vaporized off the wick. If you just blow out the lantern, full throttle to blown out, a bunch of that fuel is still vaporizing off the wick and that smells bad. This can be mitigated considerably by turning down the lantern and letting it cool, which will reduce the amount of fuel that continues to be vaporized after the flame is finally blown out. Odor may be less of an issue with lamp oil, but even with lamp oil, you'll still be inhaling the vaporized lamp oil, even if you're not smelling it. Not healthy. Now, the one reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was that there was a chip down to bare metal on the font when the lantern arrived. As stated above, the packaging was amazing and undamaged, this lantern clearly sustained this chip before being shipped. I used a dab of nailpolish that was fairly close to the color to prevent rust in the future. This did not effect the use of the lantern at all, and I will be buying more.5/21/16 update: I have several gallons of kerosene through this lantern now. Lantern has performed flawlessly, but I have found that it is actually my least used lantern. It's about the same size, weight, and cost as an Air Pilot, but puts out ~1/2 the light. Yes it burns less fuel, but if you turn down an Air Pilot to the same light level, you'll get about the same fuel consumption while still having the option to turn it up and get more light if you need/want.
