I highly recommend this as a project to do with children to help them understand the formation of a caterpillar. My daughter is grown but we have ordered several of them just for the pure joy of seeing butterflies hatch! Just a side note-once the butterflies hatch, put a little banana on your finger to feed them before you let them free. It was an amazing experience to have a butterfly eat while perched on my finger!

Kids had so much fun getting these and watching them turn into butterflies. Great educational experience for kids and beautiful butterflies emerged!

We've ordered caterpillars from other companies in previous years and this is a much better value. The shipping was quick, there were so many hungry caterpillars that I was concerned they would run out of room in their cups. You just leave them in the cup and watch them grow! They ate for about 10 days and then once in their chrysalis, we transferred them to our butterfly habitat (sold separately). Transfer is a little tricky, and it's probably the most stressful part of the whole experience but this was probably our 4th time doing it so we've gotten pretty good at it. Family was visiting and several chrysalises mysteriously fell from the paper to the bottom of the cage. We left them alone and hoped for the best. We were delighted and shocked that ALL of our chrysalises survived and we had an abundance of butterflies. We made the nectar and kept them in our habitat for about a day after emerging and then released them. A little warning, when the chrysalis opens and the butterfly emerges, things can get a little messy with a small splatter of a meconium. It's not a lot, but we were not at all prepared for that the first time we had them and my daughter was very worried that they were injured. I also make sure to keep a little space around the habitat incase of splatter. Waiting for the temps to drop below 90 so we can order more!
