These are very fragile so they must be washed and stored carefully. I bought one as a replacement for one I broke. The hydrometer is an essential tool for home brewing and this one works perfectly fine.

I started a batch of mead the same day I received this. Did the job it's made for and gave me a clear reading.The test vial doesn't have any measurement lines however, so it's very easy to overfill and hard to determine the right level for subsequent tests. I attempted to work around that by holding the hydrometer in the vial while I added my sample. My fingers slipped and dropping the hydrometer an inch or so into the vial was enough to shatter the tip, rendering both the hydrometer, and the sample, useless.So. It does do the job, but I only got one use out of it due to the delicate construction (the carelessness was mine, but the necessity for doing things the way I was, and the fragility are both functions of the design).

Very high quality. Very useful hydrometer. I liked a lot the guide that comes with it. The packaging was on point, so good it survived international shipping perfectly. This one will be helpful to make my mead making even better.

Thank god those balls are magnetic, I know some hydrometers use lead - but thankfully my trusty magnet picked them up from the counter. The hydrometer was working perfectly, though it leaned slightly, for several uses - but this one time it hit the bottom and crack! Beads everything, I wasn't sure what had happened until I pulled it out and beads started falling all over the place. The entire bottom had broken off from the impact.

Came packaged very well so there was no chance of it breaking in transit. Beaker is very nice, heavy glass.I have been using a refractometer and a calculator program to adjust for the alcohol and wanted an easier way to check gravity. The first time I used it, it showed my beer had a gravity of 1.005, and with the refractometer, I was getting a reading of 1.009. Checked the hydrometer with distilled water, and got a reading of 0.996. So I will have to remember to subtract .004 off all the readings I get off this hydrometer.Other than that, it seems very good quality and with care, should do the job.

I bought this product to help get me started with mead making. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It gives accurate and consistent measurements of specific gravity.The glass for the hydrometer is extremely thin and appears fragile, but I’m sure that is how it has to be made for it to work. Regardless, it comes with a really protective plastic case lined with styrofoam so I don’t think it would break.The hydrometer is also a little difficult to read because the lines are so small and close together, but again this seems standard and all of the other products I saw on Amazon so I think that’s just how they are made.Know that you pretty much will need to purchase a turkey baster to get test samples from your mead to the cylinder.I’ve really enjoyed this product and other than just waiting an excessively long time, it’s the only way to know when your mead is done fermenting. For what it is, I think it’s perfect and well made, and a good price compared to other options.

I can't tell if the accuracy is great or not. It took me a bit to be able to figure out how to read it, (I just recorded the numbers with pictures until I could) and I think I would prefer to get another unit that has the numbers spaced further apart so I can judge where the level is if I needed to be more precise. This one does pretty well for a general idea, though.It has a nice plastic storage case with foam padding bits for the hydrometer included in the set, and the glass test measuring tube is not too thin, although it does seem like it will break if you aren't careful. It has been lightly knocked around from washing and in transport between the sink and my mead making station, and both are still fully in-tact. The hydrometer would probably be the first thing I accidentally break, as it is very thin glass. I am trying to be careful with it, but I have a backup, just in case.
