Heirloom. Container Friendly. Blue Lake 274 merits its longtime popularity and standing as a classic. Heirloom plants produce plump, tender 5–6" white-seeded pods prolifically over a long season. Fiber-free beans are delicious stir-fried, steamed—or sautéed, and accented with garlic. Early-yielding plants require no support. One 2 oz. seed pack will sow a row of about 20.

Seeds germinated fine, but beans produced aren’t as prolific. Not sure if due to variety or my soil, but mine got eaten a lot by bugs

I ordered these seeds at the end of May but didn’t start them immediately because I already had a planting of different beans going. It would be more correct to say that I got a handful of bush bean plants from these seeds while about 80% of the plants produced were a mystery vining bean that ran rampant in my garden and climbed nearby pepper plants rather than staying in a tidy bush form like they were supposed to. As you can see from the photo, almost all of the beans produced from these seeds were some kind of (not blue lake bush) beans with strange tough flat pods complete with thick strings that that must be removed in order for them to be edible. Not cool, Burpee. I have always trusted Burpee seeds to produce the correct plant and have a high germination rate but not anymore. Highly disappointed!!!

I planted these beans, and within a few days they had germinated and popped up. I was excited with the rate at which they grew…and grew…and grew…and never stopped. I kept thinking they were about to bloom some flowers, but nope, they just kept on growing. We now have 30 plants, roughly the height of small trees taking over everything. And I love it so much! I only gave this a four star because the packaging does say bush beans, which I was expecting, and clearly they are not. But they are healthy, had about a 99% germination rate, and at the end of the day, are beans.

These beans were so easy to grow. They are bush beans so no need for trellises. They grew quickly and began producing pretty fast. There was a good assortment of the three types, although maybe a little heavier on green than the other colors. We got so many beans from this, we canned over 10 pints and had plenty fresh to eat. The plants only stopped producing because a frost came through. I am growing them again now, and looking forward to more of these beautiful beans! In my area (SC) I did have to look out for some pesky caterpillars they were eating my plants, but that’s no fault of the seeds!

Planted these seeds in our garden and they were very productive. I had plenty to can, freeze an eat. They tasted as good as they looked!
