BILT HARD 6.5 Ton Log Splitter

How long should logs dry before splitting?

Most firewood properly split and stacked takes at least a season to dry properly. For many of us, that is about six months. If you stack your wood in early spring, it should be ready to be put away for winter use by October.

Green-Wood vs. Seasoned Wood

Green logs are freshly cut logs. They still contain much of the moisture that they held while they were part of a living tree. Freshly fallen wood is very moist and difficult to cut, so it takes more tonnage to split through it effectively. Professionals recommend waiting until your wood is cured to split it.

Received this log splitter this week and have used it to split about 10 logs so far. It’s very easy to use and does a nice job splitting pine and some hardwood logs. I should have bought it years ago. My only disappointment (minor) is that it doesn’t stand upright. I know this feature was on some of the other similarly priced log splitters, and I expected it was a common feature so be careful if you have limited storage space.

Ordered the Bilt Hard 6.5 ton log splitter and 3 days later I received the Hykolity 6.5 log splitter. Same color just different name so I figured it should work. Built sturdy and only had to attach the front handle and add some hydraulic oil. Set it up on a plywood top enforced with some 1x4 strips of lumber and plugged it in. This little log splitter amazed me how easily it split my wood. It split pieces 10 1/2 inches with no problem. If your wood has knots, just put the knots towards the back and let the ram do it's job. My brother in law has a bulky gas powered log splitter and I really believe this one would out work his. Split a pickup truck load in about 2 hours and didn't even break a sweat. Best $300.00 I've ever spent and my sledge hammer and maul are retired from splitting wood and no more aching back as I'm 69 years old and the sledge hammer and maul were making me feel much older than I am.

I used this today for the firstSetup was easy. I checked the hydraulic fluid level and added some as it was at the bottom of the dipstick, maybe 8 ounces. I also loosened the vent screw 2-3 turns before I used it.I split a large Locust tree that came down in a storm in April. It was cut into rounds then and it seasoned through a Kentucky summer but the rounds were very heavy. I split ~ 22 rounds. The smallest being 9" in diameter and 16" long. The largest being 14" in diameter and 19" long. I also had two that were 10" in OD and 20" long ( barely fitting ). Most of these were at least 80 pounds each. 6 or 7 had multiple knots. I wasn't sure how this machine would handle this. It exceeded my expectations. It split all of them with relative ease. I had to reposition some of the really knotty ones but I still split these into nice small pieces.Pros:Very powerful for the home owner. If your logs are under 14" in diameter and under 18" long you will have no trouble .Relatively Quiet. The videos I watched on this were noisier that using it in person.I wasn't bothered by the cycle time. I never felt I was waiting on the machine.Cons:The stroke limiter clamp is goofy. I never used it.I broke the plastic top off the vent screw. It must have been hit by a log? No problem. It still works fine. The wheels are small and cheap. No good for hauling over just a lawn. The unit doesn't sit evenly vertically. I had to put a small 2x4 under the hand guard to get it to sit vertically.I should also note I used this off of a 20A circuit with a 12AWG/3 Extension Cord.that is 50' long. I had no issues.I'm going to build a small stand from left over lumber to not have to bend over so much.In summary. If your needs are to use a log splitter 4 times /year and split 3 or 4 chords of wood this is a good choice. Also, it should last a long time if you.maintain it , change the hydraulic fluid annually. Don't drop it. If you're an idiot and do nothing it will probably last you 2 or 3 years. If you.take care of it I think it will last you 40 or 50 uses. For $300 this exceeded my expectations. Good Luck.

ok, first off, this thing is the toy breed of log splitters. You will need to find a way to get it high enough to comfortably use it, unless you like working on your knees. Also, the two handed operation can be a bit of a pain, but its not insurmountable.I used it today to work on our yearly pile of firewood. My permit is for dead and down, so most of the wood is fairly dry already, as I get it from a burn scar from a year ago. Oak rounds up to 15+ inches are no issue with this machine. A couple of crotch pieces gave it some pause, but a little repositioning of the log got them broken down in short order. Overall, im pleased with this little machinePro'sSmall and quiet, good for those of us that live in town and have limited space and need for a larger machine.Powerful enough for MOST of what you need to split. Dont kid yourself, you wont be starting a wood yard with this as your machine, but it will break down large amounts of wood fairly quickly for personal use. Its also only 6.5 tons, so its not the Binford Wood Master 9000..... use it for what its intended for, and you will be fineCons:Low to the ground. You really either need to have it on a truck tailgate or other raised platform to use it comfortably. I have mine in a garden wagon on my patio, and I stand on the ground.... this gets it to a good working height for my 6'5" frame. Two handed operation. You need one to activate the spool valve lever, and the other is used for a momentary motor switch. Nothing left to hold a log in place unless you have an extra arm somewhere handy.Packaging sucks. the box mine came in looked like it had been through the wringer, but the splitter was just fine inside. True case of dont judge the contents by the packaging. As I said, I like this unit, and at the price point, even if it only lasts a year or so, I can replace it several times over before I come close to the cost of the larger units. Breaks down oak like a boss, and eats soft wood like its candy.
