Used this tool to cut my hydraulic disc brake lines to the correct length and used the barb press to press the barb into the new length.

This tool is feels solid in your hand and the tolerances are good - no wobbly feel when you're pressing a barb. There's a bit of play in the tip piece itself, which you want so the tool can adjust if the hose or barb isn't exactly centered, likely due to me having the hose too far out of the clamp. The cutter gives a nice squared cut, which you need for the barb to install flush for a good fit and no leaks. The blade is replaceable with the snap-off type found in small utility knives. It's worth noting that the cutter is made for hydraulic brake lines and not brake or shift housings that use a cable to operate. Those have a steel liner and will just ruin the blade. For maintaining the handful of bikes in my family, this is a great reasonably priced option. It's going to last far longer than I'll ever need, and I appreciate sturdy well-made tools. I was watching a GCN video on hydro brake maintenance and they showed this same style of tool in use, which is what led me to search Amazon for one.

I recently purchased an e-bike that sadly did not come with hydraulic brakes. I had read many reviews lamenting this fact but since I had never had anything but mechanical brakes in the past, I wasn't too concerned. Perhaps I should have been! The issue is that e-bikes are both heavier and significantly faster than most manual bikes, so the stopping power of mechanical brakes is limited by the amount of pressure you can apply to the lever. I found myself feeling a bit at the mercy of momentum, especially when traveling downhill or using the max level assist. After a couple months I decided to retrofit my bike with hydraulic brakes. The job is not difficult but if your bike has the brake cable routed through the frame, as mine did in multiple places for the rear brakes, you will need to remove the factory crimped ends and reinstall them when you have completed snaking it through the frame. That's where this little tool comes in.The ends on hydraulic brakes are pressure fitted and crimped and apparently there are ways to do that without a specialized tool, but given brakes are safety equipment, I wanted to do it the right way. This device makes quick work of getting brake fitting installed the right way.

I like to work on my bikes myself, so I've been collecting tools over the years, but recently wanted to add hydraulic brakes to my ebike, which meant I needed to do some customizing to the brake hose length. I had seen you could pound in the barb without one of these, but it seemed a pain in the butt, and this seemed like it would do the job much nicer. I grabbed it, and am happy I did! It all feels really nice in the hand, and most everything included seems to be decent quality. I have no frame of reference to more expensive tools from places like Park Tool, but this seems totally adequate for the job. I did have on issue, and that is, if you don't get the hose in the clamp just perfectly straight, it's possible to cause a bit of carnage. Unfortunately, in my first attempt, I sheared the push pin on the piece that screws down, as the hose wasn't quite straight. To be honest, that seems to be the cheapest part in the whole kit (and came with an extra to boot), but I honestly just said screw it, and after centering the hose, went again without the little extra tip, and it worked just fine anyways. I can't say that I knew what I was doing for sure, so it's entirely possible it was user error, but just something to keep in mind. Also, the hose cutter seems to be pretty decent, and I didn't have any issues trimming the hose down to size before installing a barb.

Put a little triflow on the threads before use. Worked flawlessly! Just as smooth as the parktool one at my shop, but it's $60 cheaper. Great addition to the garage shop.
