Crown Molding Support

“Many hands make light work” is a suitable motto for the new Crown Support from Bench Dog Tools. What used to require an assistant and a second ladder is now portable, permanent and unfailingly reliable. Unlike similar products on the market, the Bench Dog Crown Support straddles the molding, leaving the installer free to slide the molding and adjust it for the tightest joint possible. This eliminates the need for climbing down the ladder and adjusting the molding support device.

The soft support pads are fully adjustable to accommodate crown moldings from 1-1/2 inches to 8 inches wide. Once adjusted, the support assembly swivels and wedges against the wall and ceiling, providing a secure hold with no risk of marring.

Built from top quality materials, and with entirely tool-free adjustments. The Crown Support threads onto most standard painter’s poles. A separate adaptor is also available that allows the Crown Support to be used with the FastCap 3rd Hand Extension, a support pole that many carpenters already own.

Key Features

  • Cradles the molding, allowing fine adjustments before final nailing which is always necessary with any molding work
  • Spring-loaded crown support head eliminates the need to use pins or screw adjustments
  • Fully adjustable
  • Attaches to any painter’s pole
  • Cushions protect wall and ceiling

this makes installing crown molding a one man job. Easy to use. Holds well. The spring in it makes sure it'll hold tight. Pads keep it from marking the walls and ceiling.

I had high expectations for this device. I bought the adaptor to fit onto a 3rd hand pole support. It made it very unstable because you can't tighten the clamp up to the ceiling/crown without the the Bench Dog and pole giving out. I tried twice, and both times did the same thing. Ended up using two 3rd hand poles and finishing the 120 linear ft crown job in a breeze without the Bench Dog. I may try one more time on another job with a screw in pole support instead of the adaptor with 3rd hand pole.

The construction of the product it self was a little cheap to me but it does the job and doesn't cost an arm an a leg.

It's just not worth the money. Bench Dog may have created a solution to a problem that just doesn't exist.

I've used this tool in numerous installations over the past year. Others have mentioned the build quality not being too good and I agree. I had to sand down the plastic portions of both of the inserts where the metal arms go just to be able to adjust the slide. If I didn't receive it on a Saturday in the midst of a project, I would've definitely exchanged for a working unit.On to the usage of the tool. Using it by yourself for shorter runs is definitely what this was made for. I tried to hang a 12' length of crown and the weight was too much for this. Even trying to get it as snug as possible and then repositioning to the non-supported piece was troublesome and there were a lot of slips. On lengths under 8', it seems to shine. You can sort of slide the crown into the support from the non-supported side (e.g. the side you are holding yourself) and it works well as long as you don't accidentally hit the pad or orange part and have it fall to the ground. When you succeed, it's great, when it falls to the ground, it's frustrating. I do have to say, however, that it is better than nothing at all!I learned the best method is to measure, cut, and call in the spouse for assistance in holding up the crown, it's definitely the most secure method, providing you have access to someone who is willing to volunteer!

I have the third-hand tool supports I've used for tons of different odd jobs. This addition is a great helper. in doing crown moldings you want to have as long of a run without joints as possible but how the heck do you hold them in place when you work by yourself? Use this tool and you will greatly appreciate the ease and accuracy they can bring to a crown molding job. can be adjusted to a number of different sizes.

Seems to work well and time will tell as to the endurance of this product. But its well made and does the job of a second person when you don't have one. Handy tool
