Pull in watercolor

When you apply a dry, more saturated stroke in watercolor painting, you can pull from that stroke with just water. This watercolor technique shows form and indicates a light source or edge. Apply a stroke using very little water and more pigment. Before the stroke is dry, take a moderately wet brush and pull the color out from the darker stroke. Depending on how dry that initial stroke is, you can pull the color quite far.

Learn layering with watercolors

Because watercolor is a thin medium, you'll need to gradually build the color. Build up your layers from lighter colors to darker colors. When working in layers, let each layer dry before moving on to the next. This takes a little bit of patience, but it's worth it! If the paper is still wet when you apply the next layer, you'll end up with a strange, blendy mess.

Try the scumbling technique

Scumbling is a technique used to create soft hues of layered pigment and light. You essentially layer the color in soft, indirect layers to create the hue and look you're after. Simply lay in semi-wet strokes of paint in watercolor. As you apply more color, be careful to keep adding water, so the colors blend and stay soft. It can be easy to overwork this, producing a muddy look, so less is more.

Blend & shade with water

The ability to blend with watercolor is one of its most powerful assets. The key to blending with watercolor is, well, water! Two common ways to do this are: Create a shape using clear water and add your paint to it; Create a shape using paint, and then use clear water to spread out/fade the paint.

This is a good student-quality paper, and would probably be ok if you're covering the whole paper with paint, but the color is definitely a blueish-gray.

The paper is great quality and sturdy enough for either acrylics or oil paints (I’ve used both). The end painting comes out beautifully. The size is great for just about any type of painting that I can think of, but I am an amateur.

The quality of the paper is really nice. I really liked that it came in a pack of two, super affordable and sturdy. Also great for beginners, as my child is a beginner using watercolors. Not to mention, their customer service is on point.

I love this painting pad. I have been layering lots of water on the pad whilst using watercolour pencils and the pages have remained intact. Very pleased with this pad! Will definitely buy some more! Its also at a very reasonable price. Highly recommend!

Absolutely love the paper texture, will be using it for water colouring. I wanted to teach my little one how to water colour and all the other specialist papers were very expensive. This paper is definitely worth the money. It's cold pressed so you get this beautiful texture. Definitely worth it!

The sheets are great. I got this for my niece and she loves it. She doesn’t even remove the sheets to paint, she keeps them in the book and the paper is thick enough that the paint doesn’t bleed through. Would definitely buy again.

This paper is great value for getting affordable watercolor paper for young kids, which is what I bought it for. I am giving it 4 stars as a fabulous way of cheaply supplying my four year old. That said, I absolutely would never use it for myself if I were going to spend any decent length of time making an art piece. The paper has a felt-like texture to it, so the paper holds water just fine...until all of a sudden it doesn’t. And there is no fixing things once you’ve reached this point of no return. If you use a drier brush, the paper is fine. But if you plan to use a wetter technique, you have zero control over the bleeding.

If I were a "serious" artist (whatever that might mean), I would get myself something fancier within the normal range of $0.50-1.00 per sheet, but for having fun learning painting with my children, this is much better. It's thick enough to take some water (you can make something nice on it with watercolor or acrylic), but it's definitely flimsier than the more expensive, good-quality watercolor paper. The "dimple" pattern in the paper is larger than I'd like; it's got a rather rough texture to it. Higher-grade paper is smoother and denser. But I'm not looking to go broke buying $100 of fancy paper every month, most of it to be wasted by a toddler! I cut each page into quarters for my little ones and thus a pad of this paper lasts us a long time. I am pleased and ordering again. If you want something basic for your kids that you won't feel devastated about when they waste it, yet that can still produce acceptable works of art, this is the item for you.

This paper is most interesting! It is heavy paper...but it's thin enough to pass through my printer! If I print a design and try to paint right away, of course, the ink bleeds! But if I wait a day or two I can actually paint with Watercolors!!! I love the smoother side for details and the textured side is, well, textured!!! It has a faint bluish tinge to it....easy on the eyes. I wasn't sure how much I would like this paper, but for practice work, coloring book pages, just everyday push the paint around days it is amazing!!! I have good paints..cheap paints.....it works ok with both..I took a photo of my test pages.... I'm not a professional artist.......but I paint every day and I like this paper!!!
