- 1.Place the letter opener upside down. The position where the letter opener is cut is outward. Press the "PUSH" position on both sides of the top cover firmly.
- 2.Remove Upper Cover and Lower Covers
- 3.Put 4 AA batteries on the upper and lower side of the internal structure (make sure of the +/- direction)
- 4.Put on the upper and lower covers and start working.

I gave this as a gift to my dad for Christmas and he loves the easy of use and still tells me that he enjoys using it. I gave him one that plugs in, as well as, this battery operated letter opener and he prefers this one with batteries. It is fast, powerful and easy to use!

UPDATEI’m very impressed with the customer service of the Seller. Anyone can get a random defective item, but a Seller who promptly makes it right is to be commended. I can recommend this product and Seller.This letter opener is difficult to open to insert batteries. The battery compartment is so small it is difficult to insert a battery completely. It's like the opening is just a hair too short and you spend a while working the battery to get it in. Also, it's great when it works, which is about 2 or 3 envelopes at a time. Then it either jams with a tiny piece of paper or quits working completely. I have to constantly struggle to open the compartment and mess with the batteries before it works again. Last night I worked on it quite a while and have not been able to get it working again. Sadly, I came on Amazon this morning to return it and I missed the return date by ONE day! A complete waste of $27! I had an electric letter opener previously that last for years. This one is a huge disapointment.

Update 10 weeks later: Completely dead, and no support from Amazon -- they don't make it easy to request support request from the seller. After some struggling with Amazon, I did reach the seller, and they were quick to immediately offer a replacement. Given their positive attitude, its a pity Amazon doesn't make it easier to follow up on products that fail after the return period.Original review while it still worked:I hate trying to open all the bills and other mail I get without tearing the contents. With this little gadget, you can open everything in no time flat, with no tearing, mess, or risk of paper cuts. Works perfectly and doesn't cost enough to have to justify it as a luxury.

I got two of these, one for me and one for my daughter who has arthritis since I thought it would help both of us in opening the mail. She didn't think she would want it until she used it on her first envelope. Then she refused to give it up. I like mine as well because it is so quick and there is no effort or torn envelopes. I simply tap the envelopes so the contents settle and are positioned and are not cut. But I'm not sure I even have to do that. The only problem I had was opening the thing to put in the batteries. Had to get my grandson to do it

Really, not a life saver, but pretty close. I have a condition they has pretty much taken away the use of one of my hands. Holding an envelope feels as if I’m holding the blade of a knife.. The mail opener minimizes the touch that I need to open the envelope and take the contents. Highly recommended.
