As a scientist, I wanted to like it but the actual calibration was significantly off. Maybe I had a dud, but I'd expect more from scientific equipment.

Product was not calibrated upon arrival. SG readings are low by 0.004 consistently at 79F. This may not seem like a large margin; however, reef aquariums run under very tight salinity tolerances (1.024-1.0264). Results were compared to a calibrated refractometer and Hannah digital salinity meter. It is relatively useful now that I know to add 0.004 to the reading, but make sure to check before using this in your system!

This review is for, "balacoo 1pc Hydrometer Liquid Salinity Meter"As a minor hobby my kids and I like to keep vernal pool mini aquariums. The tricky part is, different animals reanimate at different salinity levels, encyst at different levels, lay eggs at different levels...you get the idea. So having an inexpensive, accurate-enough hydrometer really makes it a whole lot more enjoyable. This one works on the idea that the density of water varies by its salinity. There's a built in glass thermometer as this is part of the calculation (though it's easier to just measure at a standard temp). Just gently put the meter in the water, let it sink (the weight is factory calibrated with steel beads) and read the salinity off the scale where the water line ends up. Super simple and more than accurate enough for our needs! It also comes in and with a nice plastic carrying case to protect it since it is made of glass. It's a nice touch since this will be used again and again.
