It is especially useful for aquariums and marine applications. This high quality refractometer measures on 2 scales, Specific Gravity (D 20/20) and parts per thousand. It can replace your difficult to read hydrometer. Just a couple drops of aquarium water and you know exactly what your salinity is.

Seems to be accurate. My hydrometers will test 1.026 and this will say 1.025. Have to calibrate yourself. Is not calibrated out of the box. Calibration / use is easy but just like most of these (probably at least) if you wear glasses, you really seem to have to take them off each time you want to look in the scope and check the salinity. I, at least, can't do it without glasses. That, to me is the biggest drawback lol. I don't have to take my glasses off to use my hydrometers but I have to to use my refractometer. However, I'm glad I got it as I believe it is essentially to have both. You must have one for its accuracy and ability to test and cross check your hydrometer. Good unit and nice case.

I have never used one so I had to educate myself. The instructions are under the inserts that hold the instrument in case you have trouble finding them. I tested the reading with distilled water per instructions and it was dead on right from the factory. I had trouble reading the exact salinity until I discovered that you can turn the eyepiece to improve the readability. (Really dumb, I know.) It also seems that if the light is not exactly right you will not get a reading at all but this does not present a problem. Just move around a little until you get the right light. Maybe this will help some newbies like me.Anyway, after you get used to it it is easier to use and much more accurate than a hydrometer. Well worth the price.

Salinity Refractometer, Aquarium & Seawater - Dual Scale (1.0 to 1.070 S.G.) by Agriculture SolutionsThis is one amazing instrument and the only way to inexpensively test for Salinity, worked great and is a way better made then I expected, easy to calibrate just use distilled water ( if you don't have distilled water just freeze a water bottle, microwave a cup of water to almost a boil, hold frozen water bottle over hot cup of water, when moister from steam forms on the outside of water bottle it will start to drip use this to calibrate as you only need a drop or two) put two drops on the blue glass put clear glass cover over blue glass check you can't have any bubbles and glass needs to be totally covered with distilled water. Look through and focus as needed. Use the screwdriver provided and adjust to 1.00 Wipe off the distilled water from the glass (with the cleaning cloth provided) now put two drops of your aquarium water on the glass and test it the same way you tested the distilled water (don't forget to dry before you put it away). Then take a sample to your fish shop to test if your refract meter is accurate. Instructions are hidden inside the case under the molded plastic. You will need to screw in the eye piece every time to get it back into the case. Very easy to read. Don't have a saltwater aquarium without this.A NoteIf you put your hand a few inches above or over the prism glass to shade direct sunlight scale will clear up turn darker blue and make reading the scale very accurate. Now take the hot cup of water and make coffee for the trip to the fish shop. Save the water bottle for later when you mow the lawn.

I procrastinated a long time in buying a refractometer to replace my swing arm hydrometer until I found that this one was priced fairly low compared to others. I wish I had bought it sooner! It is easier to use than the hydrometer, and it appears to be much more accurate. I would highly recommend this product to saltwater tank owners. The only issue I had with the product was that the instructions were in an Asian language. However, the refractometer is easy to use and there are great videos on Youtube describing how to use it and how to calibrate it (it comes with the tool to calibrate it as well as a cleaning cloth and dropper). Similar refractometers cost twice as much as this one, but this one works great!

Some reviews stated that the product did not come with a hard case, so I contacted the seller (Sportswarehouse). It turns out the item can be bought from Amazon.com in two ways; it can be packaged and shipped by Amazon (the option with "supersaver shipping"), or for the same price it can be bought and shipped directly from the seller. Well, for reasons unknown, when Amazon ships the product they are not shipping the hard case and cleaning cloth, but there is a solution.Just buy it here on amazon.com but directly from sportswarehouse and you will recieve everything. This is an awesome, easy to use and read, excellent quality, product from a seller with outstanding customer service. I love this refractometer, I am happy that I chose this one out of the many that are out there on the market. To make sure you get the right one, highlight and copy the name of the item and paste it in the search bar and hit enter. Then, under the picture of the item it will say "more buying choices" and "2 offers". Then, click there (on the word 'new') and two options will come up. Buy the one that does not say "fulfillment by amazon".I am very happy with the quality of this item at this very affordable price. AAA++++ five-stars!
