Product Description

Alpaca Fiber: One of the finest fleeces in the world!

Happy alpacas

What's the difference between Suri Alpaca and Baby Alpaca?

There are two different types of alpaca, the Suri, and the Huacaya. The Suri have long coats that look like those old fashioned string mops. Suri fiber is known for its softness and drape due to the long, silky strands without much crimp. Staple length is approximately 8.5 inches making it easy to work with for a variety of fiber arts applications.

The Huacaya have shorter, more curly coats more akin to those of sheep. Huacaya fibers have an average staple length of 6.5 inches and plenty of crimp to make spinning a breeze. Baby Alpaca refers the finest parts of the Huacaya fleece, not the age of the animal. Only fibers with a thickness of approximately 20 microns are classified as Baby Alpaca, so you can be sure of ultimate softness to the touch. Baby Alpaca is ideal for luxurious garments that feel comfortable against the skin - no itch here!

Naturally beneficial for you and the environment!

Five natural fleece colors of Baby Alpaca wool

We offer five colors of Baby Alpaca that are naturally occurring fleece colors - no dyes are used to achieve these gorgeous shades which means no wasted water or potential irritants!

Happy alpaca

Alpaca farming is inherently less impactful on the environment than sheep or goat farming due in part to their padded feet which do little damage to the terrain they inhabit.

Alpacas are also gentle in their eating habits, as they nibble the grasses and plants they eat, without pulling or otherwise damaging the roots.

Gray alpaca fiber spun into fine yarn on a drop spindle

Alpaca fiber has no lanolin (the oil found in sheep wool), making it hold less dust, allergens, and bacteria.

It is also odor, stain, flame, and wrinkle resistant. Products made with this fiber are unusually easy to care for and long-lived.

Loved this alpaca for my woolies it was quite expensive for such a small amount. But to be expected for baby alpaca roving. It was beautiful no guard hairs and super soft and perfect roving.

I thought that people were kidding when they said alpaca wool was soft until I held this and started spinning with it for the first time! It really is such an experience!I got the fawn color because I like how the soft brown neutral looks. As with many things, the color sort of looks different depending on the lighting. The wool was incredibly soft (I cannot iterate that enough) and was a little bit difficult to adjust to, but it's definitely a very pleasant experience. The fibers are also a pretty fair length, as well. However, the fibers also like to go loose from time to time and cling to things like your sleeves or the arms of your upholstry. Luckily alpaca is generally hypoallergenic, but something to keep in mind.I've been wanting to make gloves for my mom with this wool, and I ended up purchasing another 4oz bag just in case I didn't have enough. Except now I might have too much! Maybe I'll make a cowl or a small infinity scarf. We'll have to see.

I love alpaca anyway and this is especially nice, well prepared. I'm spinning it off the point of my Dodek spinning wheel which I made. It would also work beautifiully on a Great Wheel or a drop or supported spindle. For me all of these give more control of the fiber.

I am loving spinning this up. I am making ear warmers. It's so soft. I am a new spinner and enjoying this. Thank you so much. Kelly Montgomery

I wish I had more skill to use this fantastic yarn for something beautiful, but I bought it to make beards for gnome Christmas ornaments that I turn on my lathe. It is just perfect! Perhaps 'gnome beards' should be added to list of uses.
