If you’ve never used these before or haven’t used them frequently make sure you test on scrap material of about the same thickness as your workpiece. Pick up some extra nutserts in the size you need and practice getting the right tension by making fine adjustments. Note it is not going to work in tight spaces and you need more room than you think to use this in confined space. But it works well

I had been placing nutserts with the DIY method, using a long nut, and a star washer, etc... Really inexpensive, and it DOES work well. Look it up if you only need to place a few. However, as I was getting into more projects, I found myself placing more and more nutserts/rivnuts and was wasting time with that method, since it is fairly slow. I also found that it was more than a little finicky trying to place small 5mm nutserts as the DIY tool is pretty tiny, and the threads (0.8 pitch) are quite fine, and getting good hardness bolts to do the job is a pain.I bought this tool because I recognize the Astro Pneumatic name from other places, and because they are at least based in North America. I own plenty of tools from overseas, to be fair, but I also know some people who bought some of the less expensive nutsert tools which ended up snapping/stripping mandrels right away. Since almost all of the nutserts I have used in the past have been either 5mm or 6mm, I figured this tool should cover me for most of what I'm doing, and I really wasn't missing out not having a 3mm or 4mm mandrel.Package arrived next day, and I put it to work immediately placing a few 5mm nutsert. Holy smokes, it is soooo much faster than the DIY method I have been using, and the results are great. Tool seems well made, and changing the mandrels is fast and easy, no tools needed. Carrying case is a nice touch, and each mandrel comes in it's own little case.I've only used it the one day in the garage, but did place a pile of nutserts, and even used it to snug up a few of the ones I had previously placed but wasn't terribly confident about.... I can't speak to the $60-80 kits that are available, but givent the build quality of this tool, what I have heard about their customer service, and the availability of different mandrel kits if you need + replacement parts for the mandrels that come with it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

I am a diesel mechanic and I use nutserts a lot around the trucks I work on,they are used to hold visors and deflectors and under door panels on amongst many other things like access panels and many times if the bolts and screws aren't taken out regularly and antisiezed they break or the nutsert spins and bolt or screw has to be cut off I will install any place between 20 to 100 nutserts on a daily basis and I have tried so many different nutsert tools(air, electric, hand) off brands and brand name ones and they usually end up broke in a month or a year and so far I'm very pleased for the money spent I bought the Astro 13 inch nutsert tool and the small Astro nutsert hand tool and have already set hundreds of nutserts with them with no issues and the people saying these are no good are the people not using them as they are meant to be used because so far these have outlasted the cheap rebranded Snap On nutsert tools sold on the Snap On truck for over $500 for the set. I have set hundreds of 3/8 Stainless Steel nutserts some of the hardest to set with the Astro tool and have not had an issue so far this is an everyday used tool and has held up well so far. Well worth the money.

I've been needing a tool like this for awhile, and always had to borrow my buddy's Marson right-angle type nutsetter. I finally decided to give the Astro kit a try, recognizing that it's Chinese made and might have some issues. I was pleased to see that despite some obvious design/manufacturing problems, it actually works quite well.I can see how some others may have had some problems, so let me give you a couple of tips that I think will help ensure success.First, and I can't emphasize this enough, LUBRICATE THE TOOL BEFORE USE. As it's delivered, it doesn't have a single drop of oil on it, it's completely dry. A drop of heavy oil at each pivot point, and a little light grease on the sliding quill that holds the mandrels makes all the difference in the world. Once lubricated, it takes much less effort to use and pulls more evenly.Second, yes, the handles don't pull evenly. This is due to the fact that the bore through the tool body is at least 1/16 larger diameter than the "pulling bar" that slides through it. Any little angular misalignment there is magnified into a significant offset at the end of the handles. It appears that it doesn't make any real difference, as long as you are aware of it, and try to keep the tool perpendicular to the work. Don't lean it over trying to compensate for this, as you'll set the nutsert crooked. Finally, once lubricated, this tool will provide enough leverage to break itself. You have to feel when the nutsert is fully expanded and stop pulling. If you squeeze those handles until your eyes bug out, you're going to break something. That level of force isn't necessary to accomplish the tool's function, and in fact it's detrimental.Take a workmanlike attitude using this tool and it looks like it will serve you well. Even though I hate buying "cheap" tools I think it was a good value for the money, and knowing what I know now, I'd buy it again.
