Product Description

KeyStep
KeyStep

KeyStep: a new breed of portable musical tool combines a keyboard controller and a polyphonic step sequencer to control both analog & digital devices.

We started by designing our own “slim key” keyboard action, balancing the best features of compact mini-keys with the musicality of full-sized keys into this new keybed. The size, velocity and aftertouch of this new design provide the freedom of portability without sacrificing playability.

We also designed a new polyphonic step-sequencer with 8 programmable memories that you can recall at the turn of knob. You can choose gate times and swing settings instantly to change the feel of your sequenced performance on the fly. We also included the ability to record, overdub, and transpose your sequences in real time and still play the keyboard live.

Add a flexible and fun arpeggiator mode and chord play mode and you are set for hours of musical adventures.

These features alone would make KeyStep the best portable keyboard controller on the market. But we take it further by giving you a wealth of connectivity options: USB MIDI (of course), standard MIDI in and out (check), clock sync and DIN sync jacks (yes!), and CV/GATE outputs, plus a separate, assignable modulation CV output that can be used with the mod wheel, velocity or aftertouch.

KeyStep is the perfect performance controller in a compact package.

Yo estoy super contento

It is almost perfect. I'm going to give it 5 stars anyway, as 4 isn't enough. The only thing really lacking is more arpeggiator options (adding in more octave ranges, and different rhythms). Aside from that, it is a great controller. I'm going to echo what everyone else has said and say the build quality is surprisingly great. Pictures of it make it look much more plastic and lightweight than it actually is. It's a solid build, very sturdy, and the keys have a slight bit of resistance to them, which helps with velocity in particular.Lots and lots of connectivity options, and you can power this with either your usual 9V FX pedal adapter, or via whatever you'd charge a smartphone with (mains, power bank, computer etc). I think you can even power it via an iPad.I use it to control an Elektron Digitone, and if you're looking for the same thing then I'd recommend this. Very easy to change channels on the fly., and it worked right out of the box with no additional setting up or firmware updating. I feel most controllers are geared towards soft synths (often not even having the 5 pin MIDI sockets) so it's good that this covers all possible connectivity bases as I don't use a computer 90% of the time when I'm writing/performing.£100 doesn't normally buy you something as extensive as this. Great value and highly recommended.

It is without question that I wanted to love the Arturia keyStep. After all, it offers a compact 32-key keyboard with aftertouch for just over a hundred bucks. And without question, this could be the right controller for some users, I'm thinking anyone who just needs straight up MIDI control for hardware since it does feature actual midi ports. The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer are surely the highlights of this compact controller, Because the keyboard itself is not. The keys are cheap and plastic and have no feel and small. I don't understand all the reviews making excuses for them as being just fine, they are not. This is not a playable controller, it's kind of like a Casio toy. It does have after touch, and that is nice, but at the end of the day you can't really play expressively. Same goes with the pitch bend and modulation controls... They are cheap capacitive touch, instead of proper wheels. But the thing is, I couldn't overlook all of that at this price point. What ruins it for me is that it just doesn't communicate properly with Ableton Live. MIDI communication and transport control are a mess because there's no actual software template for this keyboard in Live. Forget about it.Moral of the story, this could be useful for controlling some hardware, or for controlling software that communicates with it nicely. But, at least for me, just about anything else will do better when it comes to Ableton Live midi controllers. Not a knock on the actual device, so still four stars because I definitely see its pluses, and I'm sticking the caveats into the actual review.

This thing is awesome. For the price, you simply can't beat it. Nice build quality, responsive keybed with aftertouch, 64 step sequencer with 8 note polyphony, arpeggiator with 8 order options, capacitive pitch and mod strips, chord mode, swing and gate functions, more than enough midi channels, and plenty of connection options to pair with other gear. There is no screen, so you will have to learn the buttons and their alternate shift function. Thankfully, Arturia put has an excellent user manual that will aid you in this. There are even more ways to program it with the online software, which is simple and easy to install. All in all, it is very fun to mess around on and can take your sound to a new level. It won't have some advanced features, but hey, its $100. Like I said, for the price, you can't beat it.

This is the best small format keyboard I have purchased. I actually use every function in this mini keyboard. The keys feel weird at first as it is not mini keys (kind of reminds me of the Korg Minilogue) but in-between mini and medium sized keys. The ribbon Pitch Bend and Mod Wheels work fine. It has velocity sensitive keys and supports aftertouch. What makes this great is it has a built in sequencer, an arpeggiator, and the best part is the support for MIDI, Sync and CV. If you have older MIDI gear or Modular setup, this can be used for both. Also, while you have a sequence playing from the keyboard, you can send to another device your live playing. I have hooked up an old drum machine with a sync out, connect sync in to the Keystep, have the Keystep play a sequence to the modular and play the Waldorf Pulse 2 via MIDI.That's pretty sweet for something in this price range.Must have for noodling around or for live setup of modular synth and drum machine.

i just received my KeyStep this afternoon, and it may be a little while before i get a good block of time with it. i am somewhat a newbie to this kind of musical equipment and recently, have been busier than usual . . . But this keyboard looks quite solid, receiving dis-proportional good review, also a nice size; having 7 more than the more common 25 keys, and these are also larger than a "mini" keyboard . . . so far, am more than glad I chose this product over some prominent "others" that were clearly advertising inclusion of the Ableton 9 lite software (that i could only wish this keyboard included when i chose it in spite of believing it didn't)So I have to comment concerning my complete surprise and sharing this fact for someone considering this keyboard ---- people should know . . . it is both a significant, and a very awesome plus to me that this DOES come with software downloads --- including the Ableton Live 9 Lite software ! ! ! (over a Gigabyte of software downloads all-in-all) I had already been searching related products, somewhat resigned to a necessity i would need to make additional hardware purchases just in order to get this kind of "bonus" necessary software . . . software i was completely unaware the Keystep already included. So, great!! And for the life of me, I still can't find where this is mentioned anywhere in the product listing or any of the other reviews. I must have missed it? However, it it is very clearly stated on the Product packaging . . .so I've just downloaded a firmware update, Ableton Lite, Arturia Midi Control Center plus a 'gift' software promotion "MiniFilter V" that is offered upon completing registration of the product. As reviewers have pointed out in their reviews of other similar midi products , the equivalent Ableton introductory software retails at about $80 as a standalone purchase --give or take a few $$$. Knowing all of this now ---this product is a no-brainer and a bargain for an introductory item in its class
