Good set of mic's for the money

I have been in the machine shop industry for fifty four years . I have owned a cutting tool manufacturing and repair business for forty one years , so I appreciate the importance of accurate and dependable measuring tools. Recently my business was burglarized and my set of Starrett micrometers that I had used throughout my career was stolen. I chose these to replace them as I do not often become involved with the day to day hands on manufacturing anymore and I don’t plan to continue working that much longer. I am very impressed with these mics. I admit to being somewhat of a snob about the brand names of the established measuring tools, but the fact is the only thing I can complain about is the name that appears on these mics. I can find no difference at all between these and my very expensive mics that we stolen. They are silky smooth, great balance, and have that undefinable “feel “ that is so important to those of us that are measuring the tenth with every measurement that we make. The box that many have complained about is well built and fits the mics pretty good and while it’s not mahogany is more than adequate. These mics may or may not last fifty four years, I’ll never know. I do know if someone steals them I’m not going to sit right down and cry.

These are good quality. Ive been in the buisness for ovwr 20 years and have used off brands before. This is by far my favorite set.1)They hold their zero.2)There were no defects in the anvils (I saw one reviewer say his werent parallel and for me it wasnt the case)3)After calibrating mine, they worked perfectly on all the lows and highs... And yes you need to calibrate them a little. This is always the case even if you buy top of the line, so I dont get what people are griping about that.4) My standards were perfect... I checked.I'm not calling people who griped about this liars. I'm just wondering if they took the time to put them in a controlled environment and calibrate them properly.Only one thing to point out! Disassemble your mics and clean them. They have a heavy oil that has a few bits of debris of some kind. After cleaning oiling and calibrating I'm happy.

Based on feedback from other reviewers, when I received this set of micrometers the first thing I did was take each one apart, wipe them down, and apply a few drops of light machine oil to the threaded part of the spindle in each one. Before doing this they did not feel very grainy though definitely not as smooth as they could have been. I then checked each one against the included standards and found 5 to be spot on. The 1-2" mic needed an adjustment of one thou. I don't have any other standards so I proceeded to check the width of a human hair and some feeler gauges to convince myself of the accuracy of these tools. Perfect! I would advise to anyone experiencing difficulty with these micrometers to make sure they are taking measurements at room temperature and that the tools have been allowed to settle (don't bring them in from your mailbox and get to measuring immediately!) The vernier scale is nice to have as well.

I have been a professional machinist for 2 years. Within that time, I was programming and operating a cnc mill, most all of my measuring could be done with a caliper. Now I have transferred to a cnc lathe, on a lathe I am expected to hold tolerances within .ooo5 or greater. Thus I needed to invest in a set of micrometers, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I found this set and decided to give them a try, even though I was worried the quality would be sub par. Typically, cheap micrometers are made in china or Taiwan. I was very impressed when they arrived, the storage case was well built, each micrometer was individually sealed in plastic with a oxygen eater inside, as were the standards. The thimble on these mics move really smooth, but not so smooth that they move for no reason, the ratchets have a good feel too. The mics are very well balanced so I don't have figh.t with them when ever I have to measure away from the lathe chuck. The standards that the kit comes with are dead on, I compared them to the standards that the company I work for has, which are Brown and Sharpe, and they were exactly the same. I have been using these mics for about a month and a half and I can assure you I have tested them adequately, throughout using these mics I noticed there is a slight variance, I would say they vary about 50 millionths of an inch, so if you don't have to measure that small I would consider them to be a very good value.

I am an old time gear head kind of guy (53 years old), and have rebuilt about a dozen engines over the years. I like this set of micrometers, mostly because of their affordability. In the past, I have had access to Starrett micrometers when gauging pistons, cylinder bores, and rod & main bearings. This set is of a lower quality than that of a Starrett, but I found it to still be quite good. I have found that you are going to pay four to five times for Starrett equipment, but all I really do now, is measure pistons, cylinders, rods & mains for a rough assessment, to determine if I am going to bore the cyliders .020" over, or turn the crankshaft .010" under, etc. I let the local machine shop perform their magic, where they do have the super-duper micrometers, that are critical for their operation. So unless you are going into the machine shop business, why spend the high bucks for superior equipment, for just an initial assessment. I have found these mic's to be plenty satisfactory. If you are going to measure cylinders, you obviously would need an inside measurement, so I bought the telescoping, snap, T-gauge set also. They worked just fine, very pleased with both sets. I also bought the cylinder bore micrometer set, that uses a regular style dial indicator, where you are measuring not so much the actual bore, but rather difference in the bore, to see if the cylinder has a taper to it, or has a whiskey barrel shape to the cylinder, etc. I found it be somewhat useful, but the afore-mentioned micrometers with a telescoping, snap T-gauge sets,to be more useful.Just my two cents worth ......
