I've been an engineer for 30+ years and extracting pins is still a pain. Your best bet is to always use connectors with solder cups, however sometimes you get a connector that uses pins that insert and if you need to repair/replace a pin you need a tool like this. One thing you should know is that this tool is not really designed to extract the pin, it's designed to open the lock that holds the pin in place. Once the pin is unlocked you need to gently push or pull the pin out while keeping the pin unlocked with the tool. This takes practice. The extraction tips are very delicate, and if you dig away at the pin trying to unlock it you'll just break the extraction tip. Pins are extracted by slipping the extraction tip over the wire on the connector and sliding it into the connector to unlock the pin. Think picking a lock.Having said all that, this tool is my first go to when I have to extract a pin. The handle is big enough to provide some control while feeling around to open the pin lock. The tool also comes with 7 different extraction tips and an allen key which are stored in the handle. One last note. This tool is used for removing connector pins that are crimped onto the wire. Crimping the wire onto a new pin takes a special crimping tool. These crimping tools are much more expensive than this is. If you need to crimp a new pin onto a wire that has broken off and you don't already have a crimping tool you should really consider buying a connector with solder cups and just installing a new connector. Just a suggestion.P.S. I only gave this 4 stars because I hate extracting connector pins.

The tips on this pin extractor are split copper. That means they flex a lot. If the pin you are trying to extract is stronger than the copper (98% of the time) the copper spreads apart and does nothing to extract your pins. This item was useless for me. Look for solid metal pin extractors.
