About this item

  • ALGAE CULTURE: In our labs in San Diego we grow algae and zooplankton cultures for most habitats on our planet (and perhaps Mars!) We carry freshwater, brackish, marine, and extremophile cultures of algae. They grow to exhibit colorful pigments of red (phycoerythrin), orange (carotenoids), brown (fucoxanthin), blue green (phycocyanin), and our favorite->green (chlorophyll). Our algae strains have been selected because they are grown well in bottles and flasks.
  • SCIENCE PROJECT: Teachers, parents, and students - grow algae easily and get great results for inquiry-based projects. Because algae grow FAST experiments take a fraction of the time as land-plants (and algae is cooler!) Great experiments: toxicology, light quality, environmental changes, algae blooms. Blog posts detail science-fair winners and other projects. Students have sent our algae into SPACE THREE TIMES (would have been four, but the rocket exploded.. we still love you Space X.)
  • WHO WE ARE: Algae Research Supply is a small group of teachers and scientists with a mission of educating the next generations on aquatic science. Over 50% of the planet's oxygen comes from algae, however we are not emphasizing algae's importance in school- our mission is to make it EASY, AFFORDABLE, and REPEATABLE to teach algae in classrooms.

Algae Culture Kit for Microalgae. We have perfected the method and supplies for anyone to grow an ecologically or industrially important strain of algae. It contains everything you need to grow a laboratory-grade culture at home or at your desk! It includes the following: (1) Instructions: information about the strain of algae, illustrated growing protocol, culture care lessons, lifecycle background of batch-culture cycles. (2) Culture flask: tissue culture flask (50 ml volume) with a breathable cap. (3) Culture inoculum: 1ml in a dense culture in a 1.5ml micro-centrifuge tube. (4) Nutrient Fertilizer: our nutrients are a modification of the media formula called f/2 (Guillard and Ryther 1962, Guillard 1975). It uses NaNO3 (sodium nitrate) and NaPO4 (sodium phosphate) as the nitrogen and phosphorus sources. (5) Culturing Salts: Add salts to a 500ml bottle of drinking water (water not included in the kit). Different strains of algae have a preference for their water quality. We have perfected the recipe and include a small bag of salt to make 500ml (1/2 liter) of media. The salts provide a needed carbon source as well as slow the growth of competitive algae strains (weeds). Great for science fair projects!

This is exactly as described - great little culture of nannochloropsis here has been going for a while. The kit comes with everything you need and enough medium to keep it going for quite a while. A great gift whether for the classroom or for feeding to your aquatic pets. Sea Monkeys seem to really enjoy and benefit from eating this over their dry food.

This is a great educational tool for adults, and for children. It is super simple to learn about algae using this kit. If you wish, you can use the experience to learn more about different kinds of algae. All you need is a bottle of water, and a tiny amount of patience to be successful.

The growth of nanochloropsis did not go well, probably because of excess water evaporation which we did not prepare well for. But had a pleasant experience with algae research supply co, who showed integrity, responded promptly and were willing to send replacements. Will definitely recommend to anyone interested in algae project

For someone that is just starting and doesn't know the difference, the product name doesn't match any of the pictures. This is NOT Spirulina.
