Worthless. No instructions and online instructions are confusing. One came with a SIM card. The second one did not. Don’t waste your money on this gimmick.

Modem works well. As said in the headline, the 10 digit unlock code is on the outside of the box.

The included T-Mobile sim card was expired by a few months. Luckily I already had a US Mobile sim card that I planned to try as a lower cost data option.Even if the included sim card was not expired, it would still need activation and the purchase of a data plan. So you need some other source of internet access to go to the T-Mobile (or in my case US Mobile) website to purchase a data plan and activate the sim card.Once I had fully charged the hotspot and put the activated sim card in, my laptop did find the Alcatel network. And with the network and admin passwords provided on a slip of paper in the box I was able to access the internet. (I am in the northern California bay area)So now I have a backup internet option for my computer as long as I keep the sim card active, and I'm happy with the purchase. But 3 stars only because of the expired sim card that was included. And I will reiterate for those not too tech savvy folks like myself - you do need a separate internet access option such as home computer with internet or an active smart phone to purchase a data plan and activate the sim card. And I'll mention again the US Mobile activated sim card I had worked, and a Tello activated sim card I got later also worked. But both sim cards were really a struggle to insert. Maybe a kid could insert one in a flash but I was fumbling around for 10 minutes or so each time trying not to break the slot.

11/30/24. I just got this hotspot today and a $4 Tello SIM card. I went on there site, activated the sim card, and picked the $6/month 2gb plan to start with. Waited about 5 minutes and put the new Tello sim card into the hotspot. Put the half charged battery in and turned on. Using the wifi password in the back of the hotspot (where the battery goes) I was able to set my phone to the hotspot name and connect to it and the internet with no issue. Tello is "T-Mobile" based. Anything happens in the coming weeks/months I will update this review.

I recently deployed about ten of these at an event in a venue large enough that there was no WiFi reception in many key areas. I ordered them, then set them up at a T-Mobile store with prepaid SIM cards. The event staff then handed them out to the respective organizations.Setup was very straightforward. You turn it on by holding the power button for three seconds. Accessing them is easy, especially since you can do so via USB, and the UI is simple to use. There are many options, including the ability to limit the number of maximum devices connected, so you don't overburden the device or the data limit. After configuring them and writing their WiFi credentials on the back of the unit, they were ready to go - people just connected right to their WiFi signal and had access via the 4G connection. I also tested these with the USB connection, so that they acted as a simple 4G modem, and this worked well also. I didn't do an actual speed test onsite but with a strong signal I'd say 60-90Mbps?So, yeah, no complaints whatsoever with the units. It has a mediocre star rating on Amazon, but that's due almost entirely to issues with its carrier compatibility, not with the performance of the unit itself. I tried this with prepaid T-Mobile and it worked well, and it probably would have been better with post-paid since that way I could manage all the units centrally, but that option wasn't available for the event.I will say that T-Mobile prepaid service tech/sales phone reps are probably the most incompetent I have ever worked with. Consumer-level Comcast support is bad, but that's only because they're malicious - they are capable of helping you, they simply refuse to do so. Prepaid T-Mobile people are just wildly inept. No case numbers, no notes, so starting from the beginning with every call and transfer. Contradictory information from -literally- every rep I spoke with. Seven people over three hours, three assurances to follow up not kept, two promised email quotes that never arrived, two unsuccessful attempts to be transferred to a supervisor and I was in the same position as when I started. At least two reps told me there was no stock of any of my requested model of hotspot at any T-Mobile store within a twenty-mile radius, when subsequent phone calls to those very stores confirmed that all but one had at least some units in stock. It took -twenty-three minutes- for one rep to fail to find the price of the hotspot he was allegedly trying to sell me. I called into a commissions-based sales line, with card in hand and PO approved to make a $1500+ purchase, and multiple people -still- couldn't close the deal. The in-store US reps, however, were excellent - they had me completely sorted on every unit with one (1) five-minute phone call and a single highly-productive forty-five minute visit to their location. So, as a hotspot, if you have T-Mobile, I recommend it, so long as you already have a post-paid account or set it up in store.

This 4G device is just slightly dated. It recognizes the Freedom sim card as Wind Mobile.Go to the Freedom Mobile site for the APN settings.Turning the device on and off...don't press the power button for more than 4 seconds. It will default it to factory settings.
