EPIRBs and PLBs Enhance Search and Rescue Operations

Unique Distress Signal

  • 406 MHz Frequency: Both EPIRBs and PLBs transmit a distress signal on the globally recognized 406 MHz frequency, ensuring their signals are picked up by Search and Rescue Satellites (SARSAT.)
  • HEX ID (Unique ID): Each beacon sends a unique digital code, known as the HEX ID or Unique ID. This code is used to identify beacon registration information, including the owner, type of vessel (for EPIRBs), emergency contacts, and trip plans.

Satellite Communication and Ground Stations

  • Satellite Relay: Once the distress signal is detected by satellites, it is relayed to Local User Terminals (LUTs), ground stations that process the data.
  • Positioning: The LUT calculates the location of the distress beacon and transmits the decoded alert to the Mission Control Center (MCC.)

Rescue Operations

  • Investigation and Dispatch: The RCC investigates the distress alert, reaches emergency contacts, and dispatches the nearest SAR teams to the location.
  • Rapid Response: SAR teams are deployed quickly to the distress location, providing timely rescue operations and ensuring survivor safety.

Unit looks and feels great. Very rugged.Registered and passed test no problem. However, giving 2 stars because I paid the price of a new one and my unit arrived 3 years old and only 2 years left before needing replacement.Reaching out to see if they make it right or if I have to return it.

Item arrived on time, registered the device with the NOAA website, performed a test in my front lawn. Passed on the first test. Arrived 4/29/24, battery expires 5 years from March 2024. I have seen a lot of reviews where people receive devices with 2-3 year old dates. Not the case for me. Hopefully never need it!

This device gives us all piece of mind. Off shore fishing in bad weather can be worrisome for the partners of the fishermen. This device keeps everyone at ease.

I opted for the slightly more expensive version..PLB 425 ..it has a nice screen that gives you instant acknowledgement the unit is on and working. (I have only tested it - not actually activated it) Comes with a carrying case ..you can attach to your belt or Velcro loop to something. I ordered mine from Orbital Satcom corp..an outfit from the United Kingdom. My first unit had an issue with the labels - the date of manufacture was missing (thus I was unable to register it with ACR for the warranty. After contacting both Orbital Satcom and ACR..i was sent a new unit...problem solved. Check your label on the box and the unit itself.. make sure date of manufacture is on there.

This unit does one thing and does it redundatly well. Best of all its water resistant and floats. Puts out 5 watts of power to get a signal out in most conditions. (Unlike the other subscription based units that only put out less that half a watt). And no pesky monthly charges. This and my hand held ham radio will supplement my sketchy cel phone when I'm in the outdoors here in northern Idaho. Its a great choice to keep you alive, its cheap life insurance. All you do is register the device and add contact numbers to your file in case of emergency. A sticker is sent in the mail, and you're covered.

The company in the UK provided me with a device that can't be registered in canada. If I had a medical issue on the water or in the Bush I would have probably died. I should sue them. Extremely disappointed
