4 stars instead of 5 due to only 4 needles instead of 6 as stated in picture and product details. Easy to use, sharp and better than low quality wood handles that come with waxed thread. The price is very affordable. Yes, the needle does slip out with resistance, however, I used heat shrink tubing to secure the needle and it has not slipped once. These are better than expected for the price. See pictures....

This is a very effective tool for its purpose and price…sturdy, especially compared to awls that are simply inserted into a wooden handle. As a result, the barbs stay in the handle firmly and make it easy to use.The ‘hook’ awl barbs are incredibly sharp and there were several times they cut the string as I was pulling it through the hole. I sanded the inside area down with some fine grit paper and that helped quite a bit, but I still had to use some finesse to ensure they didn’t get cut.

First the shipping and price 5 stars but the actual sewing awl is super thin brass that looks stamped and has sharp edges. The needle collet is a regular bolt with four cuts in the bolt head and is suppose to tighten by the thin brass putting pressure on the cuts in the bolt. I could not get needles in one handle and the other is semi tight. Not worth the hassle of returning.

I bought this awl kit after watching an online video on sewing leather. Using one of needles in this kit and several inches of waxed thread, I reattached a faux leather loop that held the shoelace on my New Balance Freeze V3 cleats. It took about 10 minutes. My repaired shoe is still good after a month hard running. This simple awl kit saved me about $100. So 5 stars, no doubt.

It may be a perfectly good handle but the brass handle is turned down to be roughly the thickness of a soup can. The up side is the handle is super light the down side is the handle may be less durable than I had hoped the collet is steel with a zinc chromate plating.
