Luminator LED Light Pen

I saw some pretty good reviews of this pen so I bought three of them since I'm the kind of person that is prone to losing them and need them for my job. The first one that arrived I opened only to find that the LED light at the end of the pen was actually white, and not red. Second pen I opened, same thing. I double checked the packaging to make sure that it actually indeed said red, which it did. I thought I was crazy. The third pen I opened and voilà, red LED light. You can see a noticable difference in the opacity of the tip of the pen. If it's clear, it's 100% a white light. DO NOT open the package if it's a perfectly clear tip. Send it back. If it's a milky-opaque, then you have a red LED light. The packaging does not distinguish the difference. You can see the difference in the pictures.

I liked the idea of being able to write in the dark and still retain my night vision. Problem though, this pen flickers off and on while I’m writing. It does it so often that it renders it useless. I wrote a review and don’t not see it here. Maybe the review was of the seller. Regardless, besides the light not working (the light is the only reason I bought it), when I opened the Amazon delivery box, I found that the pen package had been opened. Why? I really don’t know. Bottom line: what a waste! If I spend a good chunk of money on a pen, it should work. It should have gone through quality control.

I was hoping this was going to be an multipurpose pen for work. The red light will work great for SFSTs as I had hopped but the body of the pen is extremely heavy, and is extremely top heavy making it very difficult to write with. Body of the pen is an odd shape and size where gripped to write with, again making it more difficult to fill out a citation or take notes with. The turn function to extend the writing point of the pen is hard to gage when you have turned it enough to fully extract or extend the pen without making the top battery cover come loose.

This pen is very effective at night for light discipline. I use it in the field frequently. The ink in the pen needs a little TLC sometimes if you leave it extended but what pen doesn't. If I could improve anything about this pen it would be a small hole in the top or center of the pen to tie it down with some cord. In absence of that I just used 550 chord and 100 mph tape around the back of the pen. Great pen and very unique.

First things first - like many others, my LED light didn't work when the pen was extended but worked fine when the pen was in its contracted state. We stole a short spring from a different pen and it worked fine after that. I docked 2 stars for quality control -- I'm not thrilled that it didn't work out of the box, or that we had to break another pen to get this one to work. Docking another star for using an absurd, seemingly custom battery that you don't seem to be able to buy replacements for. That being said, once we had cannibalized a different pen to get this one to work, it works like a dream. We looked at the characteristics of the LED it uses and it's basically ideal - a long wavelength (630 nm) and it has a narrow FWHM (about 13.5) so you'll be able to use this in the dark without affecting your dark adaptation. As ballpoint pens go, it writes pretty well (I haven't tested the "writes upside down" or "in extreme weather" conditions).Would I recommend it? Tentatively, with the caveat that you may need to fix it right out of the box.

I like it, but I'm concerned that I can find where you buy extra batteries

Better than all the other red LED pens. The light is concentrated and deep red right at the tip so there's no spill-over of light outside the immediate area where you are writing. In all the others I looked at the light was very lightly red (mostly white) and illuminated an area far beyond where light was needed. The Skillcraft red led tactical pen is deep red and directed enough to preserve your night vision. In the others the filter is either not dense enough or the entire body of the pen is illuminated with no-so-red light.

I've had three different brands of illuminated pens in the last 20 years. All my previous pens were white lights. I like this red one and it has a nice solid feel to it like a tactical pen without looking like one. I was not expecting it to be this nice of quality. I was very pleasantly surprised as soon as I held it. Buying things over the internet can be a real "hit or miss" prospect. I say this one is a "hit out of the park."
