Easy DIY Installation Guide for Styrofoam Ceiling Tiles

Step 1

Step #1) Proper Surface

Styrofoam ceiling tiles can be installed on ceilings and walls covered with drywall, lime, lime-cement, dry plaster, chip-board, aerated concrete, masonry, silicates, and popcorned or textured ceiling finishes. When installing over any existing ceiling material, the surface should be dry, stable, even, hard, and free of any dust or debris.

Important!!!

Do Not attempt to apply Styrofoam ceiling tiles over a popcorn ceiling that is soft or unstable. If the surface falls into these categories or is questionable, always remove the popcorn before installing the tiles – simply soak the popcorn with water and scrub it off the surface.

Step 2

Step #2) Preparing The Surface

Before installing decorative Styrofoam ceiling tiles on any surface, it should be cleaned of any dust, grease, wax, or any other dirt that may be present. If the surface displays any cracking or other defects, these defects should be corrected with filler prior to proceeding with the tile installation – cracking or flaking paint should also be removed.

Step 3

Step #3) Take Your Time

Whether you’re an experienced DIYer or attempting your first project, installing decorative ceiling tiles is a job where planning is just as important as the actual installation -- taking a little extra time in this phase can result in a more attractive ceiling.

Step 4

Step #4) Find Ceiling Center

Starting in the center of your room with your Styrofoam decorative tiles normally provides the most appealing layout – in many cases you may already have a ceiling fan or light in this spot, but if not, use the string method to determine the room’s center. Stretch two strings across the ceiling at a diagonal from opposite corners and where they cross should be the center – finish nails can be used to secure the ends of the strings or ask a helper to lend a hand. Draw two perpendicular lines where the strings cross to divide the ceiling into four quadrants.

Applying Adhesive, Proper Adhesion, Cutting & Caulking

Step 5

Step #5) Applying Adhesive

Instant Grab 310 adhesive is applied in small dots. If you happen to have a porous surface such as popcorn, you may want to increase the thickness of the adhesive, but a hard flat surface such as sheetrock or plaster may take a little less – use the first several tiles to determine the ideal amount needed for your ceiling. The mastic should be placed in mounds approximately two to three inches in diameter and located at each corner of the tile, in the center, and a few other spots as needed. It isn’t necessary to spread the mastic as pressing the tile into place on the ceiling should take care of that task – try to keep the adhesive in from the edges enough so that it doesn’t flow past the tile when installed.

Step 6

Step #6) Installing First Ceiling Tile

Measure across the ends of your room and make a mark on the ceiling at the center of each wall taking into account any offsets or unique situations that may affect the measurements. Use your chalk line to snap a line through the exact center of the room previously marked to perimeter wall centers – this should provide square lines to guide the installation of your first tile and those that follow. Before installing any tiles stand back and inspect the lines to ensure they appear correct. Place adhesive on the back of your first tile and press it into place with one corner in the marked center of the room. Make sure the edges follow your chalked lines.

Step 7

Step #7) Full Tile Installation and Proper Adhesion

Now the real fun begins. Start installing your full tiles, aligning them with the adjacent once for nice looking results. Make sure to press tiles firmly to the ceiling using full palms of your hands to avoid making dents with individual fingers.

Step 8

Step #8) Cutting and Installing Perimeter Tiles and Caulking

Now that you have installed all of your full tiles, it is time to cut the perimeter ones using a utility knife. Start by measuring spaces on both sides of the full tiles and wall, transfer the measurement onto the tile and mark it, connect with a straight edge and cut with a sharp utility knife. Caulking is optional but recommended, especially if you are going to paint your tiles.

Received with several tiles broken. They come 8 to a package. The top three in the top package have pieces broken off.Update: we have Dustin install the tiles today. We were able to use the broken ones for corner or end pieces. We applied them to my 20 x 12‘ cathedral vaulted ceiling in my living room and they look gorgeous. My handyman said “whoever invented these is a genius!“ they are very lightweight Styrofoam that you can see-through when you hold them up to the light however, once they are glued to the ceiling, you can’t see through them at all. We used a la Maison brand glue. For those who said that you could see the glue through the tiles, we have a white primed ceiling and white glue so you see nothing. The sheen is semi gloss and reflects a lot of light back in the room. We are do not plan to paint them the Project was very easy and it took approximately four hours. We finished off the edges with caulk and it looks very nice. Still deducting one star for the damage tiles. We like the ceiling so much that we were planning to do it again in our master bedroom.

I used instant grab. Then foam adhesive. Then lepage quick grab. The tiles were shipped arched from the heat shrink wrap. Corners refuse to stay stuck. Tile continuously curls most to all tiles have fallen. There are now curling and beginning to fall again. The surface underneath is perfectly smooth. 12x12 fibre tiles with primer. There is no reason for this other than the me work from the curling will not go away. Complete waste of 3 hours and excess of 70 dollars of glue as well as the cost of the tiles

My house is built on clay, so it moves like it has a life of it's own. It's cost prohibitive to stabilize it so I have been making it more movement friendly. I installed Armstrong Woodhaven shiplap panels in one bedroom. It was a horrible pain in the...well, you catch my drift. I installed these panels in my living room. I purchased the pre-painted ultra pure white. Totally worth the extra expense. I used Loctite Powergrab Heavy Duty to adhere them to the ceiling. It took 8 tubes. My room is 13 X 18 and I used every single one of the pack of 96. There were 16 trimmed panels left over.I think it looks great. I'm on the fence about caulking all of it but may touch it up in a couple places. I will be adding crown molding just to finish it off. It was super easy to install. It took me almost a day and a half, compared to the week or so for the Woodhaven. I was considering Woodhaven for my kitchen but I'm going to use these.

Product was used to improve ceilings in our cottage. Used in two bedrooms. Looks really good and updates the rooms significantly. Installed with caulking. Good value for money. Similar products at big box stores would have cost us $1000.

First off, let me start by saying yes this material is basically the same thickness and feeling as a styrofoam takeout container. However, you don’t want a heavy material hanging from your ceiling. You want something that is lightweight to prevent it from falling down. With that being said, I love how it’s thin, about 1/8”, and very easy to make cuts so it can fit in tighter places. I would recommend this product 110%! Some pieces did come damaged, but I took that into account when ordering (as you should with everything) and I have no regrets. We used LePage 300 for the adhesive and a DAP Flex Plus paintable caulking to clean up the seams between each sheet.

This ceiling tiles are the coolest thing ever, super lightweight made from basically Styrofoam. Beautiful designs, they are easily damaged though, so you do have to be gentle when installing, not pushing very hard, or you will end up with finger indentations. We went to install and thought we bought glue, but we did not, we bought caulking, but surprisingly that worked excellent! They are super easy to use, we installed this on top of a popcorn ceiling, and it hides it 100%. You can decide to paint over these if you want, I chose to just put them up and let them up without painting because I like the little girl that worked excellent! They are super easy to use, we installed this on top of a popcorn ceiling, and it hides it 100%. You can decide to paint over these if you want, I chose to just put them up and let them up without painting, because I like the little glisten to them, so far I’ve done two bedrooms and thought enough to do another hallway. There’s also multiple colors and designs to choose from, I chose just a basic plain tile. Overall great purchase and I would definitely recommend!

These tiles are amazing. I was hesitant to purchase from some shady reviews but they came undamaged and so easy to install. Above is before and after photos. I had wood inserts in the ceiling and they covered perfectly. I painted before installation and did need 2 coats for good coverage. Used pl 300 foam board adhesive in a caulking tube. They are like the foam plate styrofoam but that doesn’t matter to me because they worked beautifully. Couldn’t be happier!

I ordered 3 packages (24 tiles). I put them up, they looked good. One was a little damaged, but I had to use it anyway. Then I decided to do another room. I ordered 3 more packages (24 tiles). 16 tiles were completely damaged, I couldn't use them. The damage was so severe that the person who put them in the delivery box (which was undamaged) must have seen the damage. I returned them and got a replacement (didn't like having to wait and deal with the hassle of returning the damaged ones). The new ones were fine. So, I decided I would do another room, and needed 52 tiles for that room. When I came on line to order them this company had raised the price by a whopping $9 per package (each package is 8 tiles). That prompted me to look elsewhere, I found (on amazon) another company where I could order 40 tiles for $130, so definitely a much lower price. I ordered those, they just arrived and the quality of the tiles is so much better than the ones I received from this company. The other company also sells individual tiles so I can order the other 12 I need from them at $3.50 per tile.

Great product! I was finishing a partially finished half bathroom in the basement (just toilet and sink). Floor was installed, walls and doors up, fixtures in place, just needed a ceiling. So my initial attempt was with beadboard. That did NOT go well. So I began searching. I did NOT want to mess with Sheetrock again. If I never touch another piece of Sheetrock again in my life it will be too soon. Anyway, I ordered two boxes of these to allow for mess-ups (a necessary thing I have found as a diy-er). These things are super easy to install/cut. Don’t be taken aback when you open the package. They are super super light and you are thinking “really, styrofoam?!” But trust me it works. I used loctite white adhesive. These tiles are forgiving if a screw head is slightly popped out too which helps a bunch! I used a base of plywood and just glued them up. Even without paint they look great but they DO need paint. They mar very very easily! Be careful with rings, fingernails, etc. I indented one putting the light fixture back up but I’m hoping paint will help that. Overall it was a fantastic experience. I can imaging how easy it would be working with an existing ceiling (covering popcorn ceiling, etc).
