easy to install.... Not sure why the original one would break open like it did, somehow, something must of bound up and the housing gave way. But the new one has worked fine now for a couple months now.

First off - I was glad to find that this replacement motor assembly would fit my water softener. I have a GE 40,000 grain softener model no. GXSH40V01. The GE replacement diagram called for part no. WS26X21821 which apparently was discontinued (perhaps due to the inferior plastic drive gear design). On some random website (softwatersupply.com) I found a note that the WS26X21821 part no was superseded by WS26X30892. When I typed that new part no into Amazon, this item came up WS26X10021 which shows that it only works on softeners that have a valve body using 8 housing screws (as opposed to 5 screws).Since it turns out mine also has 8 housing screws and everything else looked the same, I figured let's give it a shot (even though the part nos didn't match). Well, it turned out it actually fit (sort of). First, I had trouble getting the replacement metal gear (that goes over the valve body shaft) to fit. It wouldn't seat down far enough. Tried tapping it on gently but that didn't work, it would bind up as the valve shaft reached the upper portion of the bore of the gear. These gears appear to be die cast and the tolerancing isn't all that great. I got a small flat file and filed the flat sides on either side of the gear bore. Didn't take much and soon enough I had it resting nicely on the valve body shaft.Next, I went to reinstall the motor plate and gear motor. The new gear motor felt tight going into the mounting plate. There is a shoulder around the output shaft that is supposed to rotate inside a hole in the motor mounting plate. When I first tried it it was pretty snug causing the motor to really strain - it was barely able to rotate the valve and eventually it stalled out. When I touched the motor housing it was hot! so I immediately unplugged it. I took the gear motor out of the mounting plate and then filed the hole in the mounting plate where the drive gear sticks through. After a bit of filing and some lube, I had the motor output shaft spinning easily when installed on the mounting plate. I reassembled and finally I had a working softener again! So long story short, this item worked but it would have been nice if the fit/finish was better. Just gotta be sure that things are going together easily here. If they don't, then stop and file the respective mating surfaces until they do. If you don't - you will create a lot of unnecessary friction and likely burn up the gear motor (as I think I read another reviewer had done). Fortunately, I have decent mechanical knowledge, saw the issue immediately, and was able to rectify it.Hope this helps and good luck with your repair!

As another reviewer mentioned, the metal cam and gear appears to be die-casted with a subpar tolerance -- would only fit halfway on the valve rotor shaft. I had to use a flat, metal file on the inner flat sides of the cam gear's bore for it to finally fit snug on top of the rotor. Other than that, it's been functional as intended.

I ordered this motor and gear upgrade/replacement for my Morton m27 softener and the new valve gear had a hole for a shaft about twice the size of mine. Description shows a bushing in one picture that may solve this problem but it wasn't included in my order

Too weak to turn the rotor head on my GE water softener. I even took apart the head and lubed it. Still wouldn’t work. After returning this I got an OEM motor and that one works great.
