When compressed to loads near the proof strength of the bolt, it will twist and flatten. This reduces the spring rate of the bolted joint which allows it to maintain more force under the same vibration levels. This prevents loosening.

This is a scam bait and switch. Not what is listed. They are NOT Stainless Steel. Way too magnetic to be stainless.

These are nice stainless lockwashers. They are perfect for keeping parts from rattling loose on my outdoor equipment without rusting.

Item description: 304 Stainless steel 0.25-inch helical spring-lock washers, 50 ctBrand: RoyceMartItem: B0BG9KY925Date received: 2023-10-31Headline - Good value on standard stainless steel helical spring-lock washersProduct Claims50 Ct: 1/4-inch ID helical spring-lock washers304 stainless steelASME/ANSI B18.21.1I received exactly what was claimed in the product description as to quantity (50 count; I didn't count them individually, but I did a weight count and found there were approximately 51 present), material (stainless steel), size (1/4 inch nominal), and type (helical spring-lock washers). They arrived in a small, flat, labelled, corrugated cardboard box, within which they were bagged in a plastic zipper bag. The box label notes a product number X003EO1A6D under a bar code, with text as follows: '1/4" inch ID (Inside Diamete...ainless Steel (18-8), 50 Qty MB-BR0101-50 NEW 304 MADE IN CHINA'.It wasn't on the label, but the product description says these conform to ANSI B18.21.1.The dimensional requirements of that standard for regular helical spring-lock washers are below. I measured these washers (sample of one) as 0.485 inch outside diameter and 0.252 inch inside diameter, 0.067 inch thick, 0.110 section width in which the circumference is disconnected, forced out of plane into a helix, so that at the point where the slit occurs is approximately twice the thickness of the metal. Based on a sample of one and comparing to the below requirements (there are other requirements in the standard - below are just some of the key dimensional characteristics), these washers appear to be dimensionally compliant with the specification.Dimension Standard Requirement (inches)OD 0.487 maximumID 0.250 to 0.262Thickness 0.062 minimumSection Width 0.109 minimumI can't assess the product claim that these are specifically 304 alloy stainless steel, but they are only mildly magnetic, as would be normal for most highly cold-worked stainless steel alloys. (Carbon steel would be much more strongly magnetic.)Why stainless? - stainless steel is not necessarily the highest strength material you can find (carbon steel is often stronger), but it is normally strong enough for most uses, and will not corrode (much, some mild surface corrosion is possible). They provide a great broad-based solution for small shops.
