I picked these up to replace the older, common handrail brackets. They match the new square door hardware we are using in the basement in both color and shape, nearly perfectly. The brackets are easy to use and can be swapped out for existing hardware or used in new installations. I used a laser line to ensure everything was parallel to the stairs and at the same height. Placing the arms in a horizontal fashion allowed the two main mounting screws to both hit the same stud, ensuring a secure installation. Alternatively, you can orient them 90 degrees clockwise if there is backing in the wall behind to allow both screw holes to find a solid purchase.

I bought these to install a handrail on some stairs. I liked that they swiveled and would adjust to the angle of the handrail. And I like handrail brackets that are not plain.Once I received these, I noticed a few things:The brackets cost about 3x what regular brackets cost. Regular handrail brackets cost between $4 to $7 each currently. These cost $14 each (at the time of this review). The brackets have the screw holes on each side of the base plate (which attaches to the wall), which means that you will have problems hitting wood studs with both screws. Studs inside walls are 1.5" thick. The screw spacing on these brackets are just far enough apart that I would suggest putting one screw into a stud (so that you know it is secure) and the other screw into drywall using a drywall anchor. Otherwise you will risk installing the screws too close to the edge of the studs. The pivot point on the brackets is so tiny that I am not sure that I trust it to not fail over time. Other "swivel" handrail brackets have a more substantial pivot point than this set does.So while I like the idea of swiveling handrail brackets, I do feel that there are better handrail brackets out there at a more affordable price. Handrail brackets are one of those items that you only want to put up once.
