I ordered this instrument for my son, who is in the his grade school band as a percussionist. Most of the kids play drums including him, but there are only a couple mallet players and we wanted our son to start working on mallets. The school only has bells (a glockenspiel) but I think the bigger xylophone is better to learn on and better for home practice. The main outer box it came in was pretty banged up but the inner box and stand were in perfect condition. I was surprised at the quality of the stand and the instrument and it even comes with 2 sets of decent felt head mallets. This is great for practice because it keeps the sound relatively low. The stand is sturdy, sets up easily and has good height adjustability. There is also a lightly padded case that only holds the keyboard (not the stand). In terms of the playability, the bars are large and sound good. I did not do any testing on pitch accuracy but they seem fine to my ears. There are no note markings of any kind on the bars. So if using this for a student they either need to know their notes or you would have to label them, which might impact the pitch or volume.Again, we are using this for practice at home, which I think this is ideally suited for (and priced accordingly) but I think this instrument would function just fine in a student band as well. I wouldn't call it a professional instrument but it is certainly nice enough quality and sound to use in amateur performance. And we're happy with it at home.
