For me, these will not work for painting miniatures. Having to hold the miniature so far away is uncomfortable.

I am a dentist and have been using this style of loupes for years since my fancy ones were stolen and I'm not going back. They are probably a little heavier than my old loupes but they aren't uncomfortable and they work. They do tend to be a little flimsy and eventually parts will break (then again, so did my fancy ones), so I recommend getting a backup pair, but even going through a pair of these every six months will be cheaper than buying a single pair of name-brand loupes. In my experience, all the loupes on Amazon are the same and don't vary in design or quality.

Overall, good product. The product is well built, comes with a rigid fabric case. The frame is good quality plastic, and the earpieces(legs) are rubber. It is flexable, but not bendable. The nose pads are rubber, not adjustable, but they feel comfortable. The lens on the frame looks clear. It does not come with lens covers. The magnifing lens is definitely high quality. The view is very clear. The are in focus is approximately 30 cm from the front end of the lens to the object. Considering the length of the magnifier itself, the focal length is close to 420mm.I used to use single lens magnifiers and this is my first loupe. It's amazing that my eyes feel comfortable switching between the loupe view and the front view (no delay waiting for my pupils to adjust their focal length).

1. I going to have to take one of the lenses off and put in a shim. They are not lined up in the vertical. So trying to get left and right image to merge in your eyes is not possible. But lifting one just slightly fixes it. So a little surgery and I think they will work OK.2. The focal length is fairly short. Not the long length I was hunting for. My dentist has a pair that focuses at about 24 inches. And they magnify real well. But his cost a couple hundred dollars. In all I am a bit disappointed but I think I can make them work for a few applications so I'm keeping them. You get what you pay for. I would not buy again but I don't need a second one like this anyway.I think a better solution would be https://www.amazon.com/Vision-Scientific-VF0010-Headband-Magnifier/dp/B077MTGD5S/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1529521681&sr=8-9&keywords=laboratory+magnifying+headbandWhich comes in various focal lengths and magnification levels, even one model with a little extra lens to get to 10x when necessary.

So I have wanted one of these with the 420mm working distance for a long time, but was waiting for a good price. The "good" ones run many hundreds of dollars ($400 to $1600 or more), and while I'm sure they are worth it, I can't justify the cost. Many of the cheap binocular Loupes are just regular Loupes mounted to an eyeglass frame, and those are useless as they have a very short focal length, and can't be used for stereo viewing of your work. The 420mm (16 inches) is enough for me to hold my head in a normal position, and focus on my desktop where I am doing some intricate work (like soldering components the size of a grain of salt). The 3.5x power isn't huge, but it is just enough to get the job done. Higher power devices with this working distance are very expensive. The field of view is pretty narrow, but it is free of distortion, and thus you can comfortably use these for hours at a time. I have a large lighted magnifying lens on an arm I can also use, but it creates a lot of distortion when you use both eyes, and cannot be used for hours at a time... I also have one of those visor-style binocular magnifiers you see used by coin and stamp collectors, and they too produce too much distortion. This is a precision instrument that is made inexpensively with plastic hinges, so it will not last if you abuse it. If you treat them like they cost $1600, they will last a long time.So this is a huge improvement over other options. It also leaves the rest of your field of view open, so you can see around the binoculars, so picking up things or being aware of one's surroundings is not impacted wearing these.

Although this magnifier is probably not as good as your dentist might use but it is only one tenth of the price. These are reasonably sturdy but you will need to treat them with reasonable care. They did come with a zippered semi-hard side storage case with a foam rubber insert. They weigh enough that the head band strap is needed to keep them snugly in place if you plan on looking down to the object you are viewing. They appear focus at approximately 15 inches and the depth of field is about one inch or so. I use them with contact lenses. I am not sure how well they would work if you need to wear them over glasses. I suspect the focal distance could vary slightly with your eyesight. The magnification seems powerful enough for most close work but I am not sure it is a full 3.5x. To put it in perspective I am sure I could easily see to thread even the smallest needle.Because I am a little older my close up vision is not as good as it once was. These do a good job of letting me see small details. The adjustments are adequate to handle a wide variety of eye spacing. The magnifiers also pivot and it takes just a little "tinkering" to get both eyes to see the object you are viewing in the center of each eye. The pivot cannot be locked so each time you take them out of the case you might need to spend a few seconds getting things adjusted. The position of the lenses in the frame let you look over them for other activities and you don't have to take them off. You can easily walk, carry on a conversation, or check a computer screen, then look down just a bit through the lenses to see your work. For the price these recommended. I give them 4 stars only because they are a little "fussy" to get adjusted each time you put them on.
