These are the proper clamps for CV boots on axles or tie rods. The tools give you the right tension and clamping force. Technically you can use end nippers but I never get the clamp tight enough. With the tensioning tool it makes the job easier.

Like many "generic" tools here on Amazon or for sale at discount stores, these are made to be considered good enough for occasional needs, but not something I'd rely on if using every day. I had a different style of cv boot pliers where you had to use an allen wrench to tigthen it. That was not fun.I got this set and it is much easier to perform an initial crimp of the band, then follow up with either the tools in this set, or reverting to the other style depending on preference or need. The longer handles worked well to provide leverage in addition to the reach. Every car is different, so sometimes these are great and other times you can't position them in just the right way when working with components while they're on the car.
