I forgot I ordered these and tried wrapping a plastic bag around the stem manually. I can say with some certainty that these are infinitely easier to use, and allow for holding a lot more moss. Expensive but worth it since they are reusable. Haven't tried outdoors, if they degrade in the sun then I would say not worth it. But no experience with that to speak of.
