The TIDRADIO TD-H8 offers SOOOOOOO much more than other offshore radios at similar price points! Add to that the value of the package offered in this item (extra battery, hand mic, etc.) and to me this is a no-brainer decision for the new or experienced ham user! The radio has a solid, quality feel in the hand. Both TX/RX audio are crisp and clear and RX audio can be LOUD without distortion. Programming is simple via CHIRP or the Odmaster app and I really like being able to save a 'home' file in the app but if travelling I can easily create a local file of repeaters in the area, load them via BT from my phone, enjoy the trip, and then again load my home profile once back on my home turf. Battery life is exceptional (even at high/10W output) and having a spare battery is so convenient. The additional antenna provided is an improvement over the stock antenna, but honestly the stock antenna is pretty darned good. The audio in both directions for the TIDRADIO speaker/mic is also far and above many competing products. All said and done I would say the H8 provides what I would call the best VALUE at this price point! It does cost a little more than some other entry level radios, but that minimal cost difference provides a much better quality product (and thus much more enjoyable experience) in my opinion.I would highly recommend the TIDRADIO TD-H8 to anyone, new or seasoned, in the radio hobby.

I have owned many ham and GMRS handi-talkies by the major radio manufacturers. I have never found a better quality HT for the money spent. This one is FCC approved and can be switched from amateur bands to GMRS bands following the acceptable protocol [no cross over broadcasts to the other band until the radio is manually changed]. You MUST be licensed on both radio services with the FCC to use most of the radio functions.Pros: Easy bluetooth programming using a smartphone and the TID app. High vis color screen. Solid feel and heft when held. Long battery life. Many available accessories. Many supplied accessories.Out of the box I had an external mic that did not insert into the radio body correctly. I let TIDRadio know and they sent a replacement radio body at no charge.Excellent customer service is one of their strong points and I am now a life long supporter and customer.73 N8UO / WRZR679

First off, I've been a ham for nearly 40 years, so I've had an HT or two along the way (probably at least 15 or 20). So, I think I'm qualified to assess them. This TIDradio HT is a great little unit, especially for the price. You get (2) batteries, a speaker/mic and (2) antennas. I've only had it a couple of days, but in the short time I've used it, I'm pleased with the purchase. I know that some of the earlier models (Gen 1) were plagued with problems (spurious emissions, incorrect button assignments, etc.) but I think those have been worked out with the Gen 2 models. I have not had time to put this one on the VNA yet, but plan to.The audio is crisp and clear and the display is easy to read. I have not tried the speaker/mic yet, but I've read from others that it works well. The extra battery is a plus and I have ordered a drop-in charger since you have to lay the radio down to access the charging port on the bottom. A charging port on the side would be a plus, but not a deal breaker. Now we come to the programming. The radio does not come with a programming cable, so I have ordered one. In the meantime, I have tried to use the Bluetooth programming to at least get a few local repeaters put in. I downloaded Odmaster and soon realized that I would need some way to import repeater lists. Odmaster has an import feature and supposedly can import Chirp databases, but it does not work. So I'm resigned to manually entering the frequencies that I want. It took a while to figure Odmaster out and, in my opinion, it is very clunky and difficult to use. There is not much documentation, so you're left to bumble your way through it. I finally got it working, somewhat, after several unsucessful attempts. One large issue is, nowhere in the (limited) instructions do they tell you that the BL button on the radio turns on Bluetooth. That would be helpful, since in every HT I've owned with Bluetooth, it's a menu item, not a keypad button. Anyway, I got through that and got it programmed with a few channels. I'm going to purchase a copy of RT Systems software once my cable arrives. RT is MUCH more intuitive and easy to use.All in all, it's a nice little HT and especially for the price. You don't find many (any ?) 10 watt HT's for that price.

As far a bang for the buck, this is a solid 5 star package. The radio has amazing sound quality for my old ears, the audio is easily understandable with plenty of volume. The display is bright enough with large enough fonts so that I don't need a pair of reading glasses to select a different channel. I used the free Odmaster android app to do the initial programming for my 2 meter local repeaters. That was easy, it already has a list of repeaters and you only need to select which ones you want on what channels. The Bluetooth interface worked great, just remember to turn it on.I also used the chirp software (you will need the optional USB to 2 pin interface) but I had to revert to an older (Prolific) driver on my Win 11 system. The 20230816 version of chirp had no interface to the mic gain setting, Odmaster does. The additional '771' style antenna is a nice addition. The extra battery and external mic are also part of the value added part of this package. A USB-C charger and cable are included.I have read enough trusted reviews to believe that the 10W max power is accurate. I do not want to radiate 10W of power an inch from my brain so I keep mine set on the mid/5W setting.I have been licensed as a General class ham for about 8 years now. I own a $350 Kenwood HT that I enjoy but is hard for me use as I get older due to age related hearing and eye sight loss.Would I recommend this TD-H8 package? I initially purchased one of these to test for my use. After testing I purchased two more. I guess that would be a yes on the recommendation.
