16 oz Minwax 42853 Natural Stainable Wood Filler Interior/Exterior Wood Filler

This wood filler feels like a blend of sawdust and glue. It sets up well and sands well. I used it to hide my not quite perfect mitre on a picture frame. It did the trick. I painted the frame so I cannot speak to how it will take to staining.

This is MINIWAX Stainable wood filler in a 1 ounce tube. The color matches perfectly for Pine or Popular wood, etc. Adhesion is excellent and strong. I put a small amount on a piece of paper and let it dry to see how hard it was to break it and it was stronger than wood! Cost is $5.38.

The product works well, but the package I received had been opened previously and was somewhat dried out. Mixing with some hot water brought it back to the right consistency. Dries hard enough to sand, and takes paint well.

This has a screw lid and a tip to cut off, but if you use a bit, it won't dispense easily after a week and is unussable after two weeks. Even jamming a paper clip into opening doesn't work. Comes out showing sticky paste on it but it's too viscous to make i tout the nozzle. This is even with putting lid on very tight.So, only use this if planning on going through it all in a day or two. I had the same problem with the larger 8oz size and won't make that mistake again since I wasted 7.5 oz of it.As for the filler, it's great for filling but is really porous so drinks in lots of stain to be darker than the surrounding wood. I put a very light coat of shellac (25/75 shellac/alcohol, maybe 0.25 lb cut) over the porous filler and then the stain came out just right.So filler is very stainable and stains darker than intended, and it's useless if storing over a week, just throw it away and only buy what you need. Bright side is that it does fill and is stainable at least once, so I give it 3 stars for that.

A woodpecker pecked a bunch of holes in the stained cedar on our porch post. Since I don't know if/when said woodpecker is coming back, I felt that patching the holes was the best course of action for now.This stuff works great. Easy to apply and work with. It is slightly dry but very workable. It dries hard, and I was able to scrap it down then sand it with no issues. It took the stain fairly well. Unless you know about the repair, from any normal viewing distance, you can't even tell I had to repair the boards at all. This even filled in (with two applications) and pretty substantial hole and held up well with no shrinkage. I can't comment on drying time as I gave all of it a few days, and even when I did the two applications, it was 24 hours apart.

I put it on some cracks and holes on a deck. So far it has worked through rain, sun, some temperature drops. Hopefully it stands up to winter.
