I needed a rod like this to square up my drill press table to the chuck. Using drill bits for this purpose was a bit iffy. It works well for non-critical work (I state this because I didn't do any runout testing on it) that DIYers do at home.

I checked drill rod diameter in three different spots several times with my digital micrometer and it measured.5002 - .5002 - .5001 in all three spots each time, even when rotating it 180*. Very precise and exactly what I needed for my 4 jaw lathe chuck runout test. and my mill spindle.

It's a 1/2" precision steel rod, as promise. I checked it with two calipers and a micrometer and I'd say mine was .5003", exactly that measure over its whole length, within the limits of my instruments. (One caliper is a Starrett USA made one, and while only rated to within .001", it's very accurate). So, short answer, it's a precision rod. It is what it promises.
