I seem to burn through a lot of this size (11/16) when drilling hitch-pin holes in 2" x 1/4 thick steel. This bit has held up well and is priced much better than anything at the local brick/mortar stores. Not cobalt, but if you go slow, and keep it oiled, it will last quite a long time on mild steel.

My husband used this several times already in his drill press drilling steel. This 3/4” bit cuts very well. After multiple holes through 1/2” steel it is still cutting as well as it did new. It seems to be very durible and is less expensive than purchasing from our local big box store.

Steel is close to the toughest test for a drill bit. You can see from the photos that a pilot hole was used before drilling with the 3/4” bit. SOP when using larger bits at least for me. However being a 135 degree bit this not supposed to be necessary. I used lots of oil and slow speed in order not to burn the bit. Which is probably not too much a a possibility for HSS bits but rather save the bit when possible. learned from a friend who burned a lot of bits trying to drill holes in a basement I beam using a hand drill. Speed if great but it’s really pressure that makes drilling steel easier. You may be able to use a hand held drill motor with this bit but probably not easily. May work better in wood or softer material, but I have other type of bits for those materials.

"Silver and Deming drills are all purpose drills and are used wherever the maximum chuck capacity is 1/2". They are also called S&D Drills, Blacksmith Drills or Prentice Drills (Canada). All Silver and Deming Drills are 6" overall length with 3" flute length"This bit has the characteristics of an S&D bit but the sharpening is just awful. There are three ground flats on the shank that will prevent slipping and the High Speed Steel is good for soft metals but the "split point" grind cut on this bit is suited for drilling in wood and the secondary flat is more aggressive than I prefer.I am not a professional but I do sharpen my own bits by hand. This bit as it is will need to be re-sharpened to make good cuts.Cheers

Bits this size usually sell for $25 to 30. Shipping was very fast. The drill bit seems like the same quality I would have got from a box store.

This bit came in a fancy package but wouldn't drill through .090 mild steel even with a 1/2 pilot hole. The Dewalt bits I had were much better. Save your money.
