I'm teaching myself to weld and want to make a small cookplate to set over a fire. This disk seemed like just the thing for that project. The steel is alloy Carbon Steel Q235B, which is a mid-level carbon steel used in a lot of Chinese steelwork. This alloy is supposed to be tough, easy to weld, and have a good plasticity. It seems like good choice for this project. If I end up screwing up the welds, I'll turn it into a long range target. The disk was well packaged for shipment, which I appreciate. It wasn't going to break out of its layers of styrofoam, cardboard, and tape.

So, this was a bit much in price, but you can tell the company actually makes an effort to get it to you. Mine came in a thin cardboard box, wrapped in paper, which was sandwiched in between two pieces of Styrofoam in the box. The metal surface of course isn't perfect, it's bare metal, and before I paint it I'll have it sanded down a bit. But, it is sturdy an thick, 5/16", to add some more strength over 1/4" steel. It is also a 10" circle. My purpose for it is to weld it to a stand, drill holes in it, and mount my big USA made bench vise on it. I have done this on some square hot rolled steel, and it works. But, for the big boy, which I needed this 10" size for, I really preferred the plate to be round instead of square. Since it's round, I should be able to rotate the vise in any direction, and not have any conflict with any corners. The edges are also very uniform, and both sides are not sharp enough to cut me. I've gotten hot rolled squares where one edge is rounded, and the other is so sharp it'll cut you. You can tell they did this right and good, and they packaged it with care. Yeah, it's a bit pricey, but I don't have a metal guy.
