I saw these water wells when they first came on the market about 20 years ago and have always wanted to try them so I can protect my tomatoes from the cool night temperatures. I plant them Mother's Day but it can get very chilly overnight until late June. For reasons we gardeners don't quite get, red is the only color to send the "grow!" signal to tomato plants. In fact once the warm summer temps arrive I am going to empty out the water and just lay them at the base of my tomatoes as reflectors. I've always wanted to do an A/B test so this year I can!The only downside is that these have a lot of channels to fill, which I found a tiny bit tedious. I was expecting there to be only 6-8 pockets but there are actually 22! That's OK; I realize now that the water channels have to be skinny to work as a heatsink. This year I am very excited to start growing the new dwarf tomato plants and I can't wait to see how they do with these water wells!I will be sure to post an update once I plant out my tomatoes and will take photos to document my A/B test as well. Happy gardening all!

It's too early to test these as we've got snow on the ground, but upon inspection these look like they are good quality. I've always wanted to try planting my tomatoes early and I'm really excited to try these this year. If they don't live up to my review, I will update.

Using these allows me to get my tomatoes in the ground a few weeks sooner than I would otherwise. They fill with water and create mini greenhouses for the tomatoes. The red color is supposed to be the perfect light for your baby tomato plants. Fabulous product that will help you get your garden going before the last frost date!

This seems like a very sturdy product and it is just as described, heavy plastic pockets that get filled with water to insulate plants from overnight lows in early spring.

Here in the Pacific Northwest where I live, growing tomatoes is always a bit of a gamble because our springs are so cool and early fall rains cause plants to fall apart from tomato blight. Pushing the limits by planting early, under some form of protection, is the name of the game. Water-filled plant protectors like these are very popular in my neighborhood, but they're surprisingly expensive. This is a dupe of a pricier product, and upon visual inspection it looks like the plastic is fairly thick and the protectors are well-made. So they should work well. Will be trying these out this spring!
