This is a very well-made item but the application is incorrect for the engine I needed it for. This gear has15 teeth, and that only replaces ones that take 15. Mine has 14. they stopped production on this replacement part. Customer service at PRW was excellent and understood my need but had no part in stock to replace it.recommended, but only if the part is an exact retro fit. if you have questions, call them. they are helpful.

I have a 1963 mercury with a 260 V8 motor. About six months ago, I had a big backfire and realized right away that something was off with my timing. I had the car towed home and pulled the distributor out and right away. I saw my problem: the original pinion gear at the base of my distributor had a few teeth missing lucky for me, the cam gear suffered no damage I drain the oil and retrieved the pieces of Gear that fell into the oil pan. After lots of researching, I came across this part which I knew would fit my original distributor for me, I keep the car as factory complete as possible. This means, I prefer rebuilding parts, rather than ordering new replacement parts, so when it comes to my distributor, I was not willing to simply replace the distributor because the cam gear broke. I know some of you out there will say “don’t put a brass gear on a distributor shaft with a cast iron cam gear”. Honestly, I do what works best and with little miles that I put on this car, I do not believe I will see any premature wearing of this gear for quite some time. For those of you who are looking for a replacement distributor gear for your Ford small block, I can vouch that this one works perfectly and will mesh well with your stock cam gear. For the original distributors, you have to use a press, not only to remove the old gear, but to also install the new gear. It is critical to understand that if you’re going to press your gears on an off, you must support the center shaft below the weights. If you do not, you will likely destroy the internal balancers of your distributor. This part was inexpensive and came with the proper roll pins. Once aligned and pressed on properly, the roll pins inserted very easily. I feel confident that this distributor gear will last as long as I own this car once installed, the engine came back to life with fresh oil And I take it out for cruise nights and car shows in the summer with no issues whatsoever.
