In a perfect world, the 6-inch dial caliper on my bench would be a Mitutoyo or Starrett, I mean, as long as I’m dreaming, why not? I’m convinced they are better than any cheap import instrument. The thing is, I’m NOT convinced that the incremental superiority of the “big boy” brands justifies the 6X premium I’d have to pay to own them--at least not for the kinds of “close-is-good-enough” projects I build/fabricate at home. That's where this product from YKWYKWI (for crying out loud, this is a “store name?) comes in... This is your basic 6-inch dial caliper (round mechanical dial movement with needle). The manufacturer claims stainless steel construction (though a magnet sticks aggressively). The dial is graduated to 0.001 inches.A knurled ring around the dial lets you zero the dial and a thumb screw locks the ring. A second thumbscrew can be tightened to lock the sliding jaw, if you desire. A knurled thumb roller let’s you open or snug the jaws, single-handed. These are all standard features for a halfway-decent dial caliper. The movement is alleged to be “shockproof.” Not sure how you prove that, short of risking destruction of the tool, but I will say that I zeroed the dial, then repeatedly opened and slammed the jaws shut (fairly aggressively, I’d add). The indicator seemed to return to zero each time.Fit and finish is OK, not great. I have a much older set of Chinese-import calipers I picked up some years back, though at a similar price point. The parts on this tool are less polished and refined than my older unit, and the sliding jaw does not move quite as smoothly/freely.The tool does ship in a very nice plastic storage case.Bottom line: This is a mid-grade tool, even by Chinese import standards. The $25 buck price-point is OK, though it may be worth your while to shop.I’d still rather have a Mitutoyo or Starrett, but it’s worth remembering that the mediocre tool you have in your greasy fingers (because you could afford it) is by definition better that the top-shelf tool you don’t have, (because you couldn’t). Just sayin’.

Using this caliper to measure various metals in the shop. Compares well with existing units so calibration seems to be correct. The edges of this caliper seem very "sharp" so use with some caution, otherwise looks to be a good value for those tight measurement tolerances you need around the shop.

I needed to replace my old dial calipers which had fallen on the floor one too many times, so I thought I would give this one a try. Excellent choice. These calipers are very well made out of good quality materials. Fit and finish are excellent. Very smooth action. Accurate. These are professional level calipers. Highly recommend. 5 stars.

These aren’t the highest quality dial calipers but they’re perfectly fine. They’re a bargain for around $25 when name brand dial calipers are over $100. I do notice that there are at least 5 different brands selling this exact same product on Amazon, so I’d suggest just buying whichever one is currently cheapest. These calipers are not used and they don’t have adhesive residue on them. They had some cheap oil on them at first that was kind of sticky. This isn’t uncommon for metal tools, they’re treated with oil so that they don’t rust. I gave them a quick wipe with WD-40 and they were clean. The measurement units are thousandths of an inch, not degrees. Sometimes the needle won’t point exactly to 0 when they’re closed but it’s less than half a thousandth of an inch off. We’re talking about microns. If you need that kind of accuracy you’re going to have to spend a lot more money. My only real complaint is that it can be inconvenient to do imperial conversions. The dial measures in thou and has a range of 100, so it wraps around every tenth of an inch. You’d definitely need to break out a calculator if you needed to know a measurement in fractional inches like 7/16 or 3/8. That’s a common experience with calipers like these – they do make digital calipers that can display fractions.

These YKWYKE dial calipers arrived with the stainless scratched and pitted. There is also adhesive residue on them; perhaps it once was labeled? The dial is also incorrectly mounted; when it’s zeroed out the needle is probably 5 degrees from vertical (it doesn’t seem to impact performance). Readings seem accurate to 0.001” or better. It comes in a hard plastic (unpadded) plastic storage box, which also shows evidence of use.It does work, but it’s either used or mistreated during manufacture. Either way this particular caliper should not have been sold on Amazon. One star (poor).
