How to maximise iPad battery life - tips for better performance
- Heat can permanently shorten battery life, especially if you use your iPad in temperatures above 95°F. The cockpit can certainly get that hot, so the best advice is to never leave your iPad on a plane and never put it in the sun. Also, it's even worse to charge the device when it's above 95. So try to do the charging at home if you often fly in hot conditions. Finally, airflow helps, so take your iPad out of its case when it gets hot.
- Cold (below 32 °F) can also affect battery performance, but this is a temporary problem. Again, do not keep your iPad on a plane on a cold night.
- Keep your iPad up to date with the latest iOS. In addition to the many new features Apple adds when they update their operating system, they often include bug fixes and battery performance improvements.
How to maximise iPad battery life - tips for better performance
- Use your iPad regularly. Lithium-ion batteries are designed for heavy use, so don't be afraid to use and charge your iPad often. If you don't use your iPad regularly, you should give it a full charge cycle once a month.
- If you don't plan to use your iPad for an extended period of time, keep it at about 50% charge for best performance. It's not ideal to store it at 100%, and it's even worse to store it completely dead. The best advice is to charge it to 50%, then switch off the iPad completely and store it in a cool place.
- Limit background app updates. Some apps can be data hogs even when they're not running, and this is especially power-hungry if you're using LTE. Check which apps are enabled by going to Settings > General > Background app refresh.
How to maximise iPad battery life - tips for better performance
- Adjust the screen brightness and wireless radio settings to maximise battery life. If you don't need the screen at maximum brightness, turn it down - this has the biggest impact on battery consumption. So if you can tolerate lower brightness, do it. If you don't need the LTE data service or Bluetooth in flight, switch these services off as well.
- If you suspect sub-par battery performance, it's best to use the Battery Utility in the Settings app to monitor which apps are draining battery life. iOS is pretty good at shutting down background apps before they become real parasites, but it's worth looking at every now and then. We've seen cases where aviation apps drained an iPad almost completely, even after the flight was over and the screen was off.
