When I first started to practice in 1994 I bought a Parkell Foramatron apex locator for $400. It worked well but would never read files in wet canals. Technology advanced and I tried the JMorita Root ZX and the Apex ID apex locators of a GP friend in my building - both work incredibly well with canal irrigants on board but are very pricey. I looked at the new Parkell Foramatron - I love their products. It's $600. As a Prosthodontist I rarely do endo. I refer to my Endodontic colleagues weekly, but I always have patients/staff/friends that ask me to do it. At this price point I decided to try the Woodpek III. With Peridex, RC Prep or anesthetic in a canal and a K file or Protaper file attached this unit gives you a very stable, accurate length reading. The manual is thorough. Access through metal crowns/PFMs can give some false readings if the metal in the crown makes contact with the endo file in the circuit. Of course digital x-ray sensors make verification of working length quick and easy as well - there's just something nice about seeing the visual display and hearing the audio feedback of file progress as you extirpate pulp and negotiate canals. Jumping from a buccal canal to a palatal canal on a maxillary bicuspid was seemless. The unit's display showed the advancing and retreating file very clearly in each canal. The rechargeable battery lasts a long time. The 2015 Woodpek III cost a little more than half of my original 1994 Foramatron which was cheap and a third the price of a new one - that's incredible. ** The unit came with an AC charger/adapter for Ireland. Amazon was fair as usual and gave me an allowance to purchase a US based charger. When ordering the unit I would clarify to the seller that you would like the US AC adapter. If you do root canals (even as infrequently as I do), this unit is well worth the investment.
