I got this for my 5 year old son to use. He had some trouble getting the gears to turn. THe pieces are quality though and it's a great STEM activity, but probably not for the younger ages listed in the description.

Our kids first started playing with a magnetic version of one of these gear sets at the local science center and loved all the designs and different motions they could create. This one is even easier to use because it has a 'peg board' that the gears are fixed to, so you can build up really large and mesmerizing gear walls. The inclusion of plastic screws and nuts to attach the gears to the pegboard also builds their motor skills, and these parts are large enough to be safe for even our 3 year old to play with.Overall and excellent product that we've already gotten multiple hours of enjoyment out of.

This is a great set to show children how things work together. They can assemble the gears following the pictures on the cards or make their own designs, and use the wooden screws and the included tool to attach the gears to the board. Then see what happens as you move them. Uses no batteries (yay) and all the parts fit into the tray below the top. Great for one or two children to play or with a parent

This is a great toy to stimulate the minds of both boys and girls. I like that children can use this toy with the 24 cards that are included in the set or to create their own designs. The frame and gears are wooden and the peg board and screws are plastic. I like that the gears turn with ease unlike some I’ve tried. This toy will create hours of fun.

This is such a simple but fun toy. All of the pieces are held in the lower section and the colors give it a vintage look. The gears are held in place by plastic screws aber the screws are two different lengths: short screws for a single great, and a longer screw for stacking 2 gears. There's a wooden screwdriver that comes with the set too. They are plenty of gears. You can easily fill the whole top with gears and have some left over. The quality is fine. It's basic plastic. The plastic isn't real thick and if a child stood on the top, it would likely crack, but as long as it's not abused, it will hold up fine. My children really liked playing this and it two played together without any trouble or fighting.

I purchased this for my 20th grandchild at 3. I am a retired preschool teacher of 3year olds and mother of 9. I have bought and used “lots” of toys. This self-encased set of colored gears provides enough sizes to teach size/teeth ratios and appropriately sized screws to teach “righty tighty/lefty loosey” while allowing your 3year old scientist to create a bit of baby mayhem while learning about basic machines. And it all fits easily back in the slide-in top platform.
